The Perk- Friday afternoon

With very little time left on island, and with a best friend who was finally back- they had terrible timing- Sia had called Jessica for some coffee and girl time while they still had it. So after class, Sia headed to the Perk, ordered her drink, and grabbed a seat by the window to wait.

"Hey, sorry I'm a few minutes late," Jessica said as she rushed into the shop. "You would not believe how much paperwork we have to deal with when like two crimes a year happen and the culprits never end up jailed."

"Let me guess, reports on why they weren't jailed?" Sia said with a little smile.

?That would make more sense," Jessica said, sitting down. "I had to file one thing about whether or not the sky was the right color for X number of days, which referenced another form about what the proper color was."

Sia blinked. "This surprises me, and yet it doesn't surprise me."

"That pretty much sums up everything about the job since I started," Jessica said. "So, how's things with you?"

"Mostly I'm preparing to leave," Sia admitted. "Apparently there's nothing like not being able to take most of your things with you to remind you how much stuff you have."

"And you came here with just a bag or two of stuff, right?" Jessica asked. "I don't know how we collect so much more than that. I'm pretty sure it's some kind of dark magic."

"Dark magic and a dog," Sia confirmed. "Who may be leaving here with more things than I will. If you want any clothes or anything, by the way, you're welcome to it."

"I may take you up on that," Jessica said. "I'm still trying to rebuild a wardrobe that'll last me longer than just between laundry days. Or at least lets me be lazier about when laundry day is."

"I'd be happy to help encourage that," Sia told her, sipping her coffee. "Nothing new on home?"

"Portalocity has stopped taking my calls," Jessica said. "That's the only progress in any direction. It's harder than you'd expect to get a good feel on whether or not a world is still there or if something's just blocking you."

"I've heard of things happening like that before," Sia said. These things happen when your great-something grandmother had to explain how she'd aged ten years on island with only two years of high school. "I wish I could offer ways to help."

"You're there when I need to whine," Jessica said. "That helps a lot."

"And I still will be, if by comm after this month," Sia said. "Though I would not say you've been whining. I think you've been holding up very well."

"I'm very economical in my whining. It makes me come off better," Jessica joked.

"It really does. I barely even noticed," Sia said approvingly.

"Then it's working well," Jessica said. "So are you leaving right after graduation, or sticking around for a bit?"

"I'll be leaving the week after, as soon as I have a location of where to go," Sia said. "I probably could stay longer, but I've been away from things three years as it is."

Not that she had guilt that Jessica would probably understand or anything.

"And that couldn't have been easy," Jessica said. "I would have probably ruined completely necessary plans to keep me safe at least once by now."

"I thought about it more than once," she admitted. "But given who I am... The right decision was made for me. And now that I'll be back I hope they know I will be making up for lost time and there's nothing they can do about it."

"That's the Sia I know and love," Jessica said. "Do your thing and do it like nobody else can."

Sia smiled. "It will be nice to get to be a bit bossy again."

"I kind of miss it myself. Bossing around the troopers just isn't the same," Jessica mused.

"Not even during a crisis?" Sia asked.

"Give me a crisis that isn't that last one and I'll let you know," Jessica said. "There was too much egg on my face there for me to judge poperly."

"That also wasn't your fault," Sia pointed out.

"Doesn't mean I don't feel like a chump for throwing a guy in a cell that somehow has zero magical protections," Jessica said. "He could have at least broken a wall down instead of teleporting out."

"It would have been the courteous thing to do," Sia agreed. "It could be worth considering having some kind of protections put on the cells, with all the magic users here."

"Maybe I just have to fill out the right paperwork," Jessica joked.

"If you're late the next time we hang out I'll assume that's what you're doing," Sia grinned.

"It's going to be my new mission in life," Jessica said. "Reasonable jail accommodations in Fandom! Basic magical precautions! Reinforced walls! I'll win this battle or get annoyed trying."

Not die. S wasn't dying over that.

"Be careful with the reinforced walls. It might encourage people to teleport out instead of smashing their way out," Sia said.

"There has to be a magic spell the prevents that. I need to know more witches and sorcerers," Jessica said.

"That sounds like a great icebreaker at the next Three Minute Dates," Sia said. She might have been joking?

"Ha! 'Excuse me, do you have magic powers? Think you could help me make a cell inescapable. No, no, I promise it's not a sex thing,'" Jessica said. "I can't decide if that'll go better or worse than my current dating strategy."

"What is your current dating strategy?" Sia wondered.

"Not dating," Jessica admitted.

"Then this might be a step up," Sia decided.

"I'm actually not convinced," Jessica said. "The magic prison thing has a strong possibility to lead to weird looks, or worse, eagerness. It's going very weird very fast."

"You just need to work on your delivery," Sia said. Yes, she was kidding this time.

"I'm sure I'll have the kinks worked out by the fifth round," Jessica said. "Hopefully on multiple levels."

"And if not, at least you wouldn't be able to say you had a boring night," Sia said. All glass half full, this girl.

"We should probably make sure people can't bore out of the cells either," Jessica considered.

"I thought that went unsaid along with the reinforcements," Sia said.

The fact that Jessica went there might be a sign of workaholism, but... wasn't like Sia could judge.
