"I'm just saying, you guys might do more business if Sparky here was topless," Kenzi was telling one of the baristas, and pointing to the cuter baker guy at the register. "It's a theme. It's summer!"

"It's against health regs." The cuter baker guy was turning bright red as the main barista scolded Kenzi. "Leave him alone, you have a boyfriend."

"Like any health inspector survives first contact with the Island," Kenzi scoffed. "Imma take my muffin and my mocha over here, you think about it. I will be."

Roland had taken to going for long, moody walks around the island, this spring, and today's brought him past Jeff's just as he felt like he was starting to make a decision. He spotted Kenzi inside and went in to join her, scrounging up change to get himself a donut.

"Hi."

"Hey, dude. How's tricks?" Kenzi sipped her mocha and put her feet up on a chair, then nudged one closer to Roland. "Take a break from the busking circuit."

"A bit," Roland set his guitar down on one of the spare chairs, then sat in the one Kenzi had offered. "Small towns like this really aren't the best places to make a living that way."

"You should go into Baltimore, now that the weather's better. Or D.C." Although taking the Metro or bus would probably eat up the money he made from busking. "We should find you a beater car to make it easier."

"I don't drive," Roland said. "And the police in Baltimore are creepy."

The police everywhere were creepy. But Baltimore police currently seemed rather more so, just now.

Kenzi hummed in what might be agreement on that point, and nibbled at her chocolate-chip muffin. "There's supposed to be a reunion this weekend. Maybe you can make more money from that." She considered. "I could play drums with you," she offered. "People like groups for music."

"Actually," Roland said, biting his lip. "I was thinking it might be time to -- move on."

"What?" Kenzi's dismay was tempered by a lack of surprise. "You don't want to stay and find out what monsters will come out of the ocean this summer?"

"Not particularly," Roland said, smiling faintly. "More importantly -- I don't know a lot about bards? But I'm pretty sure they're supposed to travel. I left Toronto to do that, and I kind of stalled out at the first place I found."

"To be fair, living here is like living a lot of place at once," Kenzi said with a small grimace. "I kinda want to yell that you can't leave, but..." Yeeeeah, this had been coming for a while. Between the all dark magic and living on her couch, Roland wasn't having all that much fun lately. "So how're you gonna travel? Tell me you're not hitchhiking, that's just asking for the worst."

"I have managed to save some money up," Roland assured her. Without actually saying he wouldn't be hitchhiking. "Not paying rent for so long definitely helped with that. And, hey, I can write you all about my adventures!"

Roland was good at letter writing. It was the primary way he communicated with one of his best friends, back home.

"Ha! Cool." Kenzi brightened. "If you write any songs about this place, you gotta send us copies. And I kinda suck as a letter-writer, but I'm awesome at phone calls. So you know, tell me if you're in the middle of a quest when I call. OOo, you can even find somebody to teach you to play that harp!"

"Or find someone who the harp likes better than me," Roland said a little sheepishly. "That's the general idea." He leaned on the table and looked at her seriously. "Thank you. For letting me crash on your couch and just for being a great person. There are a lot of shitheads out there; I'm always happy to find people who are actually wonderful."

"Awww, man." Kenzi scooted over and slung an arm around him. "Mi casa es tu casa, always, okay? If you need a place to crash again, you can come back for a visit. It's been fun having you around. You're always welcome."

Roland leaned into the little half-hug. "And I'll return the favor, some day, if I ever get my act together enough for a place of my own."
