Fandom Post Office, Thursday

It didn't seem right to be cooped up inside any building this week; it might have been somewhat overcast, but the temperatures were grand, and sitting around a cooled post office wasn't Edward's idea of a good time. So he spent the morning making mail runs, as he'd been told he was allowed to do them.

Sadly, that meant that by noon he was out of mail to deliver, and he was back inside, sorting items as they came in.

If the office itself had introduced any shenanigans, he hardly noticed. He was too busy eyeing the door with some small amount of woefulness.

When Cosette came by on her lunch break, she couldn't resist teasing Edward about the look on his face.

"If you're that disappointed to see me, monsieur," she said, looking far too mischievous to be mistaken as serious about it, "I can take my leave."

To be fair, she'd been planning that opening line since she got close enough to the post office to peek in through the window.

"I thought you might get a bit restless, cooped up indoors," Cosette said sympathetically. "You haven't any deliveries to make right now?"

"I doubt you can have too much of that, though I'm not surprised you've that much energy, nor that being inside in the quiet for so long doesn't suit you," Cosette said with a laugh. "Well, who's to say you can't take a few minutes to step outside every now and then, just to enjoy the outdoors? I shall have to see to it that people take care to send more mail on Thursdays from now on, to keep you amused."

Yes. Because that was absolutely in her power.

"If I must, yes," Cosette said with the kind of determined expression that said she really would if the situation was actually that dire. "As it won't do at all to have you looking that pitiful. In the meantime, though, I shall do my best to entertain you before I have to return to the library."

Lucky everyone whose door she wasn't going to be knocking on, too.

"Am I to perform for you, then?" she teased. "But I hadn't prepared anything -- well, I suppose I could sing, if you like."

She actually meant that last part.

"Oh!" Cosette realized she hadn't mentioned that before. "Yes, we learned music at the convent, and I play the piano as well. I don't know that I'm good enough to give a concert or the like, but I've been told I do well enough."

Cosette laughed. "Well, in that case, I'm rather fond of this song," she said, and began to sing. She had a good voice, if not quite mature enough, and she did mangle the words a bit since she didn't actually know German, not to mention that her rhythm was a touch off due to lack of musical accompaniment, but she did in fact do well enough.

The nuns had never been much for compliments, and her father praised everything she did anyway, so Cosette wasn't really sure how to handle them; her cheeks flushed, and she smiled.

"Really? I'm glad you think so. I do have to admit I'm not actually sure what the song is about, only that I love the music."

"Oh, probably," Cosette agreed. "I do know that the opera is all about jealous lovers and betrayals oh I see what you did there Hugo. In any case, it's just as well you don't know, so you can't tell me whether I made a muddle of saying some of the words."
