After the shifting realities of the not-Matrix, it was good to be back to the solid realities of places in Fandom that Alana knew well: Dorm room. Classroom. Bookstore.

Today the coffee table books seemed to be somehow tacking themselves into tiny actual coffee tables, but ALana figured that was what she got for working in a Fandom bookstore. She claimed one of the stacks as a footstool and kicked back to flip through the latest cheesy YA series she was reading. This one was about werewolves.

"Hey, babe," Johnny said as he walked in. He didn't even wait to see if there was a customer he might be calling babe instead. "How're the books treating you today? Also, hi, I'm back."

"Hi, honey," Alana tossed back cheerfully, and waved vaguely to the aisle of books currently playing at being furniture. "The coffee table books are building coffee tables. So, y'know. Average. Much calmer than last week."

"The thing that scares me is that I wasn't here last week an I can still agree with that," Johnny said. "What happened here last week?"

"Alien kidnappings," Alana said, rolling her eyes. "I wish I would have been able to call you, but you're probably better off missing it. Me and a bunch of other people got sucked into this computer simulation of some weird-ass version of Fandom. I punched somebody and got tossed into this, like, sitcom world. Took days to get out."

There'd been a makeover. It had involved mousse and a neon headband, and Alana planned to never speak of it.

A pause. "Do I even need to tell you that I'm not making that up?"

"My sister's ex-boyfriend turned into a megalomaniac who created new monster life to assassinate anyone smart enough to get in his way, so we got a bunch of people together and beat him up in a pocket dimension," Johnny mentioned. "Right now, I'll take just about anything as reasonable fact."

"Is everything okay now that you are out? And how was your punch?"

"Your sister's -- okay, your week tied with mine," Alana said. "Is everybody who isn't the ex okay?"

Before he could answer, she added, "And yeah, I'm fine. I thought the punch was pretty good.Not sure how the spiny-faced guy I gave it to felt about it."

"More people were hurt than I'd like, but surprisingly few fatalities overall," Johnny said. "That's something."

"Kinda nuts that we can both have that kind of craziness no matter where we are, I guess."

"It's one of the little things that makes us work so well as a couple," Alana deadpanned. "We're both really good at falling into ridiculous situations and getting out without being dead. Yay us?"

"Yay us! But is it wrong that I wish I didn't miss every single time Fandom has one of those big ridiculous weeks with the really crazy stuff?" Johnny asked. "I'm always either out of town or oblivious to people possessed by stuff or whatever. I'm a great superhero at home, kind of a crappy one here."

"It's weird," Alana admitted, because she wasn't about to lie to Johnny. "I mean, weird you always get out of them, not weird you wish you didn't. I missed one last summer and felt sort of cheated, you know? Like everybody had been on some awesome vacation and they forgot to ask me."

"Even if I do feel guilty about missing out on that stuff. Like, I'd kind of like it if after you punched that guy, I could kick him in the face for good measure," Johnny admitted.

"But now I'm curious, what's the thing you missed last summer?"

"And there was part at the end where we started getting powers," Alana told him. "We could have jumped really high and stomped holes in cars together. It'd be an amazing date."

She waved a hand at the question. "Some sort of haunted carnival, I think? People got sucked into it and couldn't leave. Shook Sparkle up enough that he didn't want a homecoming carnival, so it must have been bad."

"That sounds like it would have been fun," Johnny said. "The jumping around and car stomping, not the haunted carnival. That sounds like it would have killer clowns and, dude, no."

Alana gave him a tiny, twisted smile. "It was," she admitted. "I stole a tank and ran shit over, too. And when we woke up we all had to fight naked on a spaceship. Somehow I think you might have been okay with that. But yeah, it was definitely more fun than killer clowns or being possessed. Not that I wanna go through the whole thing again anytime soon."

"You. Fought. Naked. On a spaceship," Johnny repeated. "That's... I'm pretty sure that's all of my favorite things in life, all together, in the all-together. I'm so sorry I missed that."

"To help or to watch?" Alana asked, raising an eyebrow. "Not that you couldn't do both..."

"Probably both," Johnny admitted. "Probably more watching, though, as long as you had it under control."

"And you're the one with powers," Alana pointed out. "Some hero you are."

From the way she was laughing, she didn't sound too offended about the hypothetical.

"If I use my powers, it's all over too fast and you don't get to appreciate my body," Johnny explained. "I prefer to give you something nice to look at."

"I'm not sure I can ogle my boyfriend and kick Zin ass at the same time," Alana mused. "Guess it's a skill I have to work on."

"I'm sure you're a natural at it," Johnny said. "Who knows, maybe the Zin guy, thing, whatever would be distracted too."

"Maybe," Alana allowed. "Maybe next time we get attacked, you'll be around and we'll be able to find out."

"Hopefully," Johnny said, looking down a little. "It seems like they need me at home more and more often, so maybe my timing will be bad again."

"I hope not," Alana said, eyeing him a bit anxiously. "No chance you could hand some of this stuff to someone else, huh?"

"Sometimes you need a guy with the power of a sun," Johnny shrugged. "And when they need it, they really need it or else they wouldn't call. It's like my sister wants me to get a good education or something."

"... we're getting a good education here?" Alana asked, teasing. "Could have fooled me."

"Before I came here I didn't know that a girl with wings could be so hot, so I'm learning stuff," Johnny reasoned.

"I'm glad I helped you in your quest for knowledge," Alana informed him. "And I've never had a boyfriend this long that I can remember, so I'm learning stuff too."

"See? Great education," Johnny said. "We can also work on our math skills and try to figure out tips if you want to get dinner when you're out of here. Because sometimes book learning is helpful, too."

"I'd be up for that," Alana decided. "Thai? I need spring rolls."
