The Perk, Friday afternoon

Johnny had his bags packed up just like he did when he first showed up in Fandom: big backpack completely loaded up with absolutely everything he could fit in it. It was a little tougher this time thanks to the accumulation of a year's worth of stuff, but he made it work. Now he was just hanging out at the coffee shop, killing time until his portal showed up. How was he killing time? By keeping his coffee piping hot.

Look, you had your mindless time killers and he had his.

While he waited, he stared out the window. He was going to miss this place that only seemed to have action when he was otherwise preoccupied. And he was really going to miss all the girls. Some a lot. All of them at least a little. Man the girls here were hot.

Alana obtained an iced coffee before she went over to Johnny, but honestly it was more out of habit than because she wanted it. Breakups were hell on her appetite.

"All your stuff fits in one bag?" she asked, skeptically eyeing that overcrowded backpack. Because that was totally the most relevant thing to say.

"It's made of a material that compresses stuff way more than you'd expect," Johnny explained. "One of the perks of growing up in a crazy science building. You get some cool stuff."

"You could sell exercise clothes made out of that and make a fortune," Alana said idly. "Which someone probably has, huh?"

"They will eventually, but the military had first dibs on everything the Baxter Building came up with," Johnny said. "But it is the stuff I wear that doesn't burn when I flame on, so it goes to pretty good use."

"I dunno," Alana said, smiling lightly at him. "Being on fire and naked would be a way to make an effective entrance."

"Don't think I haven't thought about it. But I fly too fast and that would hurt in a very personal area," Johnny said. "But it's not like the suit hides anything that much."

"So. How are you doing?"

"The suit definitely gives a good idea of what you have under it," Alana agreed. "And I'm ... you know. Not terrible. How are you?"

"Okay, I think, considering everything," Johnny said. "I made it to today, I'll make it through tomorrow, and then I'll see where everything goes from there."

Alana smiled gingerly, reached to take his hand. "Should we try to keep in touch?" she wondered. "I'll text you when we get invaded or turn into something funny, you text me when you take down a supervillain?"

"I think you underestimate how many supervillains we have and how awesome I am at fighting them," Johnny said, giving his hand to her. "You'd have to deal with daily texts."

"Oh, gee, how will I put up with those?" Alana teased. "It's not like I like you, or anything."

"Just remember, you asked for it," Johnny said with a grin. This was so much better than Tuesday.

It was true, Alana was doing better now that she had accepted the inevitable.

"I'll manage," she said. "Besides, you'll be doing some scary stuff. As long as you're texting me I know you're okay."

Gwen was on a totally different time zone when she got the email from Johnny, but she was calling anyway. That was friendship.

"Hey," Johnny said, once he answered. "I was hoping I'd get a chance to talk to you."

"Of course you're talking to me. You're leaving?!" Gwen asked.

"Things happened back home," Johnny said, not wanting to get into specifics off the bat. Gwen was living with her Peter. She didn't need to hear about another one dying. He wasn't smart enough to work through some deductive reasoning there. "They need me back there on a permanent basis."

"What things?" Gwen demanded. "I thought I was ahead of you in the timeline."

"I thought I was ahead of you..." Johnny said. "Whatever, alternate timelines. There's a chance we're not even going to have the same stuff happen. But things have been nuts and... one of the superheroes died."

Gwen was quiet for a moment. "Yeah, same here."

"I'm sorry." He was really sorry that the slight differences in their worlds weren't bigger right now. "So, yeah, I need to be back home and do what I can, you know?"

"Yeah. I don't have to like it though," she said, because she was Gwen. "Gonna be weird to get back and you're not there."

"Gonna be weirder for me to not be here," Johnny pointed out. "I have no idea what I'm doing for school yet and there's no way my sister lets me get away with nothing."

"I was gonna say boarding school, buuuut," she said.

"Yeah, probably not, unless there's a weird one in Brooklyn or something," Johnny said. "And that's completely possible."
