Devil's Nest, Sunday night after sunset

It had not escaped Eric's notice that there were rather more people on the island than a typical Sunday night, and that's why he had jacked up the drink prices ten percent.

There was a neatly printed sign in the window:

DRINK SPECIAL: GREMLIN BITE
(straight Tequila because that's all you really want, let's face it)

The Devil's Nest was open and everyone's favorite vampire Viking was in the VIP section. Please, like he'd serve you people.

"Oh, that's just wrong," Buffy said, eyeing the specials.

Eric arched up an eyebrow. "The lady would prefer something else?"

"I've been beating up gremlins all day. Zombie gremlins. Two unmixy things that mixed and made my day hell because I didn't want to be trying to eat anybody's brains today, and my alternate universe little sister is dating my alternate universe friend. The last thing I want to do is order a gremlin bite." Which didn't really answer the question, but she'd needed that rant.

Eric stared at her for a long moment, then went around the bar and pulled out a bottle of marshmallow vodka ~~that no one was drinking anyway, Eric was a businessman here~~ and slid it over to her. "On the house."

"That's better," Buffy said, looking at the bottle. "Huh. Marshmallow. That's... whimsical."

Tiny leaned in and murmured something. Eric made a face. "Apparently it's not bad with chocolate liquor and cream soda," he said.

"I guess we can try it," Buffy said. "Especially since the name isn't traumatic, probably."

Ah. A real bar. Max had missed this.

"I'll have a bottle of whatever's most expensive," he declared as he leaned on the bar. He'd probably end up slamming terrible gin by the end of the night, but while he could still taste anything, he figured it might as well taste good.

"Don't think you have a half million dollars with you," Eric replied with a smile, "and if you do, I need to see it up front."

"Hmm. In cash?" Max pursed his lips. "No. Though it's possible my credit card didn't get activated when I left."

He fished around in his pocket for a bit, pulling out various odds and ends before ultimately pulling out a worn American Express Centurion card (and don't think Max hadn't appreciated the irony of the name when he'd first obtained the thing). "Oh, damn," he muttered. "Expired."

He let out a sigh. "So much for extravagant splurging today."

"I think we have another bottle of marshmallow vodka around," Eric said. "I can give it to you half price."

"Marshmallow vodka?" Max frowned. "Why do you even have that stuff?"

Eric jerked a thumb at Tiny. "Apparently it was the only way to also get the 1946 Macallan whisky."

"Package deal, huh..." Max nodded thoughtfully. "Guess I can't fault you for that, but I'm not about to buy anything without a similar deal." Sorry.

As usual, Kate headed straight for the VIP section.

... Okay she made a detour for the bar and got herself something cute and girly. But right after that, it was straight for the VIP section.

"Hiii. Hug?"

"Kate!" Eric said, breaking completely from his dour and untouchable lord of the dead thing to give her a hug.

Kate would have acted shocked if not for the fact that, y'know, they did this basically every time she came by. So instead of even fake shock, he was getting hugged pretty tightly.

Also: "Oh wow, did you get shorter?"

No, she was just in heels this time.

Eric gave her a mock scowl. "No. You're in some extremely tall shoes. Let me see them."

Kate stepped back so she could show off her fabulous heels. While beaming.

"Knockoffs," she said, "but they make me feel tall and grown-up."

Guess what Kate was getting for Christmas. Shh, he was a secret soft touch.

"Very nice," Eric said. "Trying to be taller than Bod?"

"Trying and succeeding." No need to act so smug about it, Kate. "But, mostly waging an often unsuccessful battle against Seamus not being able to tell the difference between a shoe and a toy for chewing."
