Playground in the Park [Sunday afternoon]

Yes, it was a little chilly to be outside, but Tobias was a pretty pragmatic kid and had layered another beige shirt over his original one, pulled on his brown poncho-thing and had headed out to explore some more after a breakfast of milk and dry toast.

(Abnegation kids knew how to party.)

Now he was on the swings, looking around uncertainly because this wasn't exactly activity with purpose, plus it was enjoyable: two things the Abnegation faction definitely frowned on. He was doing it anyway, because Tobias had a pretty strong independent streak, but the first sign of an adult with a sour expression and he'd be off of the play equipment like a shot.

And there was Gwen, definitely not dressed for the weather, running towards the playground with a "Sliiiiiiiide!"

"Be careful!" Tobias cautioned. "It's tall!"

Not really, no.

"They wouldn't put it here if it was gonna hurt us!" Gwen said confidently, already climbing the ladder up.

Four gave her a "you poor thing" look. "Maybe they just couldn't take it down."

"Nope!" she said, pausing to slide down. "See, it's fun!"

"Fun," Tobias repeated. "I don't get to have fun."

That's why he was the most serious 9 year old ever to find a swingset.

"Yeah, you can, silly," Gwen said. "Come slide with me!"

"What does it teach you?" Tobias asked. He wanted to have his explanation ready for when an adult came by.

"...How to have fun,"
Gwen said. And added, "And I dunno, science or stuff."

She was lying.

"Science," Tobias repeated. "I can use science." He pumped his feet a bit, trying to figure out the swing.

It was kind of sad, watching a kid try to work at having fun.

Gwen watched, and said, "No, you have to push off, and kick with your legs."

"Oh," Tobias said, frowning a bit as he finally got the motion down correctly. "I'm Tobias."

"I'm Gwen. See, you're doing good!" she said.

Tobias gave her an uncertain grin. "Yeah?"

"Yep!" She gave him a thumbs up. "Keep up the good work!"
