The Perk, Saturday afternoon

Between Fandom weirdness recovery, her jobs, Christmas Eve with her fellow clones/troopers, and the general holiday ennui of knowing that she was already home for the holidays since her home was long gone, Jessica had been dealing with a very long week. But now she was settling into the week between holidays with a cup of coffee, a list of plans, and happier thoughts. And, because the barista insisted, a Santa hat. Jessica wasn't sure if she was trying to get rid of the hat, thought Jessica would look cute in it, thought Jessica would look funny in it, or just did it for the pure hell of it, but whatever. Santa hat it was.

Eliot swung by for a coffee, enjoying the unusual quiet that was Fandom at the holidays, and nodded to Jessica as he came in. "Nice hat."

It was a little hard to tell if his tone was meant to be sarcastic or not. Mostly, he was just glad he wasn't the one wearing a Santa hat this time.

"Thanks. I'm hoping for some Christmas nostalgia to come into fashion surprisingly fast," Jessica said with a return nod. "I know it's kind of an ambitious hope, but I find that kind of hope goes well with coffee."

Eliot nodded, raising an eyebrow. "See, I woulda gone with more of a 'twelve days of Christmas' explanation. But yours is way more creative."

"If the real explanation is boring enough, I see no reason not to go too far with a creative explanation," Jessica explained with a nod. "It keeps things interesting."

"If the real explanation involves the talking pony, I don't want to know about it."

In Fandom, Pinkie could totally count as "boring".

"Enjoyin' the quiet around here?"

"The barista wanted to get rid of it, apparently," Jessica shrugged. "And she's not any kind of talking pony as far as I know and I'm not going to check."

"But yeah, other than the terrifying thought of people being disguised ponies that I just gave myself, the quiet has been nice. Almost a full week without having to punch something? No complaints."

"I can drink to that," Eliot agreed, raising his mug in salute. More than a week, and he might start getting twitchy, but a week off was always nice. "You have a good holiday, then?"

"Not the best ever for a variety of reasons, but I hung out with some of the guys from the trooper station," Jessica said. "They're... I don't want to say 'fun' because they might take that wrong. But it's not a bad time. How about you? Do anything special?"

Eliot shrugged. "Hung around here, mostly. We helped the diner deliver dinners on the mainland and I skyped with my sister and her kids." Which, considering he hadn't spoken to his sister in 20 years before last Mother's Day, was actually pretty damn special. "Probably would have been dragged along to do a lot more, but Parker's currently ferret shaped. It's her favorite holiday."

"Okay, so I wasn't hearing things during the radio broadcast the other day," Jessica noted. "Is she noticeably excitable because of the season even as a ferret? Or is it tough to tell since, well, ferret?"

"Honestly, I haven't spent that much time around ferrets before," Eliot said. "Do they like flinging themselves into snow drifts?"

"That sounds like something a ferret would do," Jessica said. "I base that entirely on YouTube videos."

"Actually, I haven't even looked at YouTube. I base it entirely on what I assume is on YouTube."

Eliot laughed. "Ain't like I'd be able to call you on it. Don't spend a lot of time on YouTube, myself."

Other than occasionally checking to make sure "Kenneth Crane" hadn't snuck back out of internet obscurity.

"I'm on it a decent amount, but I mostly use it for science stuff. Lectures, experiments, the rantings of crackpots who don't realize how close they are to actually being geniuses..." Jessica explained. "It doesn't leave much time for cute animals, sad as that may be." She didn't look very sad about that.

"Yeah, you look real broken up about it," Eliot said. "So if you're so into science, how'd you end up in law enforcement?"

"I was a teenage superhero," Jessica said. "It stuck. I also put in a lot of hours at Stark's, because I see no reason to choose one thing."

"Fair 'nough," Eliot said. "How does someone get into that business? The whole teen superhero thing." If he asked Kathy, she'd get prickly and think he was being judgmental again. He was just curious.

"I'm following in the footsteps of a guy who got powers, didn't stop a crime he easily could have, and saw that lead to the death of somebody very close to him. He didn't want that to happen to anyone else if he could help it," Jessica explained, showing herself to be not prickly about the topic at all. Yet. "I took my cue from him."

"He a friend of yours, or did you hear about him through the grapevine and get inspired?"

"I was cloned from him," Jessica said. She was being more honest about that with people these days. Even people she barely knew. On some level, it was a fun nugget to drop. "So it's really in my DNA."

". . . Huh." Yeah, that information would have gotten a much bigger reaction from Eliot as little as a year ago. "That part of what got you into science, too?"

"Part of it. The guy I was cloned from was a genius science guy, too. So it's kind of a waste if I don't use everything I have, you know?" Jessica asked.

"S'pose so. And hey, I bet it keeps you nice'n busy when things get quiet on the crime front."

Which around here was most of the year, barring the occasional invasion.

"And it helps me be better prepared for when things aren't quiet," Jessica said with a grin. "No details, though, since it's not really ready yet." Eliot seemed like the kind of person who would ask that follow up question.

He was -- but he was also the kind of person who understood the value of classified information. So he just nodded instead. "I'll be curious when it is."

"When it's ready, you'll know because of some monsters being knocked out of the sky," Jessica promised.

And now Eliot was picturing some sort of surface-to-air military defense system. "Well, here's hopin' the next batch of flying eels holds off till it's done."
