Okay, so there were new people on the island, which Sparkle was aware of, but really didn't particularly care about either way. So long as they weren't going to blow the place up or try to arrest him or kill somebody he liked, they were welcome to do whatever made them happy, and he'd give no shits about it.

...

Fine, that wasn't completely true. New semesters, especially in the winter, sometimes came with people who hadn't exactly been anticipating Fandom Island and whatever that entailed, and there was usually at least someone who needed more than the clothes they had on their back, this time of year. So he put a sign out in the window:

It was basically just a matter of him hitting the employee discount button. Since there weren't many employees making use of that yet, he wasn't terribly worried about a one-day clothing sale and what it would do to the shop's income.

Lucille needed a coat. Yesterday she had worn only her shawl, which wasn't nearly warm enough for this weather, so when she headed into town today she had put on her old, moth-eaten one, hoping no one would pay too much attention.

Also, she wasn't sure what kind of clothes would be available, and more importantly how much they cost. Her funds were quite limited, but that wasn't something she would like to have to tell anyone.

Noticing the sign in the window she was a little relieved to see that there was a sale. At least that was something. She entered the shop, closing the door behind her, and looked around the room.

No worries, Lucille! Demon Marcus carried a bit of everything. Literally. If you had three legs and a set of wings, this place could probably clothe you.

"Hey," Sparkle said, giving the new girl a pleasant enough nod when she came in. "Can I help you with anything?"

As Sparkle spoke to her Lucille snapped into a smile. She approached the counter, noting to herself that judging by the staff here the shop hadn't much to offer in the way of good fashion, but she was not in a position to be choosy.

"I'm looking for a coat," she said.

"Well, we have those," Sparkle replied, raising an eyebrow at the girl. Hey, didn't matter to him what she thought, just so long as she didn't voice those opinions.

Mostly.

"Any particular style you were looking for, or are you just going for 'warm' at this point?" He gave her a once-over, and then smirked faintly. "God, are you out of your time, or what?"

"I would prefer something that went well with my dress," Lucille replied, deliberately ignoring the comment. "As well as warm, of course. I'm unfamiliar with the current fashion."

What she had seen others wearing could be summed up under the word 'indecent'.

"The current fashion and Fandom fashion don't usually exist in the same time zone," Sparkle shared, slipping out from behind the counter with a shrug. "You can just do you, that's fine, it isn't like you're going to stand out any more than, like, the blue kids or the pony."

Wait, how many blue kids were there, these days? At least one, anyway.

"We've got warm, long, and black that shouldn't clash too bad with what you're wearing. How's that sound?"

That actually sounded good. Perhaps she should overlook his appearance, as he seemed quite accepting of hers.

"Then yes, I'd like to 'do me'. Long and black will be fine."

Sparkle's favourite sort of revenge was proving people wrong. Especially when that involved doing something well when they'd already made up their mind that he couldn't.

"Then we've got a few jackets over here that might work for you," he replied, sounding like he actually knew what he was talking about as he made his way toward the ladies' fashion. "You'll want something that'll keep you dry too, I'm guessing. What are the winters you're used to like? And how's your budget look?" A beat. "Are you even all that used to American currency yet?"

All important questions the day after the newbies arrived.

"I'm from the north of England," Lucille said, following Sparkle. "Our winters are cold and damp, and I would have been fine if my coat had been stored properly."

At his questions about money, she looked a little uncomfortable. "I have currency from my own time, and know nothing of its value here," she confessed. The subject had to be discussed, after all, and he seemed to be used to people in her situation.

"Tough deal," Sparkle said, frowning sympathetically. Okay, so the wealthy little princess was having a hard run of it. He could behave himself for that. "I'm from central Canada. I know all about cold winters and trying to keep warm in them. I'll tell you what... I can let you leave with a coat on loan, and then give you directions to the island's bank. They can exchange your money for American-- they should be able to adjust for inflation or whatever so that it's still worth something here and now when they make the exchange. And then we can assess how much you have once they're done. If that's still not enough..."

He shrugged his shoulders.

"Happy new year. I'll cope."

Was he worried that she wouldn't come back after hitting up the bank? Not really. Small island. It wouldn't be hard to ask around and figure out who the prissy new Brit girl was, anyway.

The kindness stung. Lucille wasn't used to it, and she certainly hadn't expected it, so responding made her feel awkward. Biting her lip, she considered the offer.

"That is very generous," she finally said, having decided that staying warm was more important than her pride. "I will return as soon as I can with the money." She added, to make clear that she didn't intend to run off with a coat: "My name is Lucille Sharpe, and I live at the school."
