Roof of the Kwik Stop, Thursday Afternoon

"Okay, so I was gone a while," Dante said, "Again. But I brought gifts."

The cat squinted at him from the other side of the roof. Dante held up the tupperware and opened it demonstratively.

"I kept some leftovers from the holidays," he said, putting the box down and shoving it partway across the edge of the roof, where it was still flat. "There. They're all yours."

He was going to spend the next half hour or so watching the cat slowly creep across and over to the container; he decided to light up a cigarette while he waited, kicking his feet against the wall. Keeping an eye on whoever came down the street, just because.

Since ha had no classes today, Lucille had decided to go for a walk to get herself better acquainted with the town. Her new coat kept her warm and it looked very nice too, with a fur collar and embroideries. She still hadn't paid for it though, and finding the bank was one of her hand wavy goals today.

Walking past a shop she caught sight out of the corner of her eye of a boy sitting on a roof. Curious, she looked up.

Lucille couldn't see who he was talking too, but she was quite sure he was referring to her. She froze at the comment, and had to remind herself that it must be meant to hurt her.

Struggling to come up with a suitable response - it was too late to just pretend she hadn't heard - she ended uo just glaring back.

It wasn't personal, Dante. Lucille just suspected that of most people.

And now he was grinning at her, probably quite pleased to have got the reaction he wanted, and Lucille was still unable to come up with a good response.

"Nothing," she called back. "I'm just in awe of your lack of manners."

"Oh, I'm sure you have," Lucille replied, now feeling confident enough to smile at him. "Although I'm afraid you're not unique at all in that respect. It's not such a rare talent, after all."

Perhaps it would be better if she just left. Lucille felt that she ran a risk of losing this, and that would be quite annoying. On the other hand, walking away could be interpreted as the same thing.

"Oh, but you seem to have a pet to comfort you," she replied with mock cheerfulness. "I trust you can overcome this disappointment."

That didn't quite make sense to Lucille, so she just said: "Well, they care less about manners, don't they?"

That made no sense at all, and Lucille felt she was missing something. Perhaps language in the future had changed more than she had expected?

"You make no sense," she announced firmly, seeing no reason to pretend otherwise.

"You lack a talent for that as well," Lucille quipped back, deciding that he didn't need to know her name.

Lucille just made a face, shaking his head, and gave up. With determined steps she walked off, continuing dow the road.
