The Arms Hotel, Monday
Mary hadn't spent the weekend in her hotel room. In fact, she hadn't even been in the building. And with most people gone on spring break, she hoped she could sneak into the lobby early with her messy hair and wrinkled dress before anyone saw her.
But when she slipped through the hotel's front doors, she ran right into Gunther, who was putting out the specials board earlier than usual. Mary ignored the chef's gawking and continued into the lobby, where the entire housekeeping staff was gathered for a meeting. Here, Mary paused for a moment as she realized the eyes of nearly every hotel employee were on her. Then she cleared her throat.
"I would like to thank whoever put the flowers in my suite last week," she said with a smile. "I could have sat there, all alone, feeling miserable and dwelling on my two broken engagements. But instead, that damned pollen forced me to get outside and actually do something. And you know what? I'd forgotten what it felt like to have a good time with someone without worrying about where the relationship was going. And it was great! I have never felt better. Now, I will go upstairs to freshen up and give everyone a chance to gossip, and then when I come back, it will be business as usual."
