"Look!" Alluka held her elephant up to the store. "See, I told you I'd bring you back here!"

Her elephant looked down sheepishly (elephantly?) and nodded.

"And that's why you should believe me," she scolded. "You won't be stuck in my room always, I promise. You get to come with me too."

Her elephant nodded again and said it was sorry.

"You're forgiven," she said, and hugged it tightly. "Now, I think we have new hats in stock. Did you want to try them on?"

Her elephant was willing and eager to do so.

Dante... was running low on shirts again.

And cash, but he'd burn that bridge when he got to it. (That's how that proverb went, right?)

So he showed up somewhere near noon, hoping vaguely Sparkle or Ada would be in so the shopping part of going shopping would be bearable. "Hey," he called on his way in... and immediately spotted a somewhat-unfamiliar face. Ah, well.

Alluka looked up from where she was trying on summer hats and modelling them for her elephant.

She beamed. "Hi, hi! Can I help you?"

Sparkle would be so proud of her! She was learning so well!

Wow, she was chipper. Dante was pretty sure he'd seen her around, but still.

It actually made him blink for a second. He reached out to poke at a shirt to hide it, like, a second later. "I'm just here to grab a few shirts for cheap," he said.

"I can help!"

She settled a hat on her elephant, set it down carefully, and hopped over.

"What kind of shirts? Casual ones? Or, or more formal ones? Though the formal ones all come with bigger numbers, so maybe not?"

Dante gave a little tug on the grey, sleeveless shirt he was wearing. "Something like this is fine," he said. "I'm not a big formal guy."

Considering the last time he decided to dress up to go to a party, he'd more or less showed up wearing a corset, yeah.

Alluka considered this a tragedy. He'd look really good in fancier clothing.

Still, she couldn't say that.

"Just in grey?" she asked, a bit wistfully. "Or are other colours good too?"

At this point, maybe red would be the best color to go with. Dante liked red.

But he also liked his regular shit. So he shrugged. "Black or white is fine," he said. "You're-- what's your name again, right? You're at the school."

"Yes!" she said, and headed down one of the aisles. "Shirts like that are this way! I'm Alluka!"

Alluka paused, then kept going with: "It's still weird that the school allows people who aren't princesses and princes into it, don't you think? It's a castle, but..."

That didn't seem to matter.

That was kind of a weird train of thought.

Dante eyed the back of Alluka's head and thought about that. Then he shrugged. "Maybe somebody figured out princes and princesses are assholes," he said.

"No, they're not!" Alluka said indignantly, as she spun to face him. "They're good and smart and brave and noble and beautiful and they go on epic quests and get married and live happily ever after!"

"In the storybooks, maybe," Dante said, rolling his eyes. "Real life, not so much."

He'd never met one, but he'd seen plenty of rich people. They were probably the same.

"But, but Elsa is beautiful and brave and kind and she's a Queen!" argued Alluka, who was... probably more invested in this than she ought to be. "And, and when Mabel was a queen of Toylandia, she was fun and kind and happy!"

Alluka had also been a queen of Toylandia, but she had the survival instinct to not say that to a meanie.

Dante'd met Mabel. Mabel did not look like a Queen. She kinda acted like the kind of kid who'd pretend to be a Queen for funsies, though.

"I don't know Elsa," he said, shrugging again. "But you ever seen the British royals? I think they like dogs better than people." He reached out to dug on a shirt on a rock. "God Save the Queen."

She'd been a real queen! She really had! For, like, two days! In a locker!

"Maybe they do," she said, a bit sulkily, but calming down. "Maybe it's because some people are mean."

"You give somebody more money than sense, they come out mean more often than nice," Dante said.

He was trying not to be a complete asshole. You could tell by the way he'd said 'mean' instead of 'an asshole'.

Not trying very hard, but still, like. A little.

Alluka's eyes went big (er, bigger) and puzzled.

"But why?"

"'Cause they don't have to care about half the shit we do," Dante said, shrugging. "Just getting more power, cash, whatever."

In a little over a year, he was going to look back on this conversation and weep.

"Hmmmm." She hummed and poked through a few of the shirts. "How do you know? Do you know a lot of rich people? Are you rich?"

"Had to deal with enough of 'em to know they're dicks," Dante said, letting go of his attempts to be sorta-nice in the face of interrogation. "And does it look like I'm rich?"

She blinked at him.

"Does rich look like something in particular?"

Alluka was honestly confused.

"You think a rich person would come in here with a shredded shirt, looking for discount clothes?" Dante asked, staring at her.

Admittedly, this shirt was slightly less shredded than... most of the other ones he had left, but it still had a hole or two.

"Why not?" she asked, all big eyes and honest confusion. "If they need a lot, or if they like the brand, why wouldn't they?"

"'Cause it makes them look cheap," Dante said.

Ringo wasn't in need of any new clothes in particular, though if something jumped out at her she probably wouldn't turn it down. But she hadn't had a good chance to talk to Alluka in a while, so after classes she swung by.

And she brought a bakery box that had some suspiciously sugary smells coming from it.

"Ringo, Ringo, Ringo!" cheered Alluka, as she peeked around one of the aisles. "You're here! And have a box!"

Was it a box of snacks? Please let it be a box of snacks?

"Is it an exciting box?"

"Alluka, Alluka, Alluka!" Ringo responded, grinning at the other girl. "I do, indeed, have a box."

She held it out for Alluka to inspect. "Why don't you open it and see if it is?"

Ringo suspected that the answer was yes. Because the box was full of cupcakes.

She skipped over to look at the box.

"It's from the bakery," she shared. "Because that's the box they use."

Alluka was a detective!

"And, and it smells good!" So she was going to open that box, after a quick glance at Ringo for permission. She squealed. "Lots of cupcakes!"

"Cupcakes from the bakery!" Ringo agreed with a giggle.

Then she put on a serious face. "But you see how many are in there? They gave me way too many, and I can't eat them all by myself." But maybe Alluka knew someone who could help her?

Alluka looked down at the cupcakes.

She could eat all of them.

"Um," she said. "I, I could help?"

If Ringo wanted her help?

"Really?" Ringo widened her eyes in mock-surprise. "You'd be willing to do that for me?" Alluka was so generous!

"Because we're friends," Alluka said earnestly, missing the mock part of the surprise. "And because cupcakes are delicious!"

Well, they were...

"They are!" Ringo agreed.

She grinned. "Well, if you're willing to help me, then I suppose I should let you pick one or two to start with, hmm?"

"But they're yours!" she protested. "You should have first pick, Ringo! It's only polite!"

"Hmm. Well, if you insist. I'll start with, um, this one!" Ringo plucked out one that had white frosting and colorful sprinkles all over it.

Then she grinned over at Alluka. "Your turn!"

"I want... I want... this one!"

The one she picked was a lot like Ringo's, except that it had chocolate frosting instead.

Because... chocolate, that's why.

"Thank you, Ringo!"

Ringo giggle. "You're very welcome."

She moved over to the counter so that she could hop up to sit on it. "Think we can get through the whole box this afternoon?" she asked.

"Yes!" she cheered, clambering up onto the counter as well. She wriggled her feet once she was seated properly. "But, but Kathy wouldn't like that we did. Kathy says more vegetables, all the time. But I still want to eat all the cupcakes."

Kathy, clearly, was fighting an up-hill battle.

"Maybe we can keep it a secret from her for a bit. I'm sure it'll be fine." Ringo grinned.

"Maybe we can go get some fruit afterwards?" That was a reasonable compromise, right?

She giggled, nibbling on her cupcake.

"I do like fruit," she admitted. "Especially the berry ones. What's your favourite, Ringo?"

Ringo hummed thoughtfully as she took a huge bite out of her own cupcake. "That's a tough one. Apples are pretty good, but I feel like I should pick something else if I don't want to be kind of a cliche, you know?"

I wish it was still the weekend.
