Post office, Thursday

Tip's mom sent her a care package most weeks. She was still apparently having separation anxiety or empty nest syndrome or whatever it was you got when your teenage daughter went away for boarding school for high school and left her alien best friend back home where it was still pretty easy to nearly mix up the salt shaker with the chlorine shaker. Since Tip worked in the post office, it was usually easiest to just pick up her package at work and dig right into it.

Today's included a bright shiny new teen romance novel, the cover of which featured the silhouette of a human -- probably a girl, judging by the hair -- leaning their head against a much smaller, suspiciously dome shaped figure -- which could belong to any one of the Boov's seven genders. The two looked out across a weirdly empty desert landscape under the curve of a grotesquely purple moon. The title: Love By the Gorg Light.

"Oh my god." Tip stared at the cover, not sure whether to be amused or appalled. She didn't even ask Bill to pardon her language before she flipped it over to skim the back. Instant bestseller! Best new romance of the post-invasion era! -- New New York Times, it read. Their love is forbidden and anatomically improbable, said another quote, this one from some blogger Tip had never heard of, but Jessica and Abba Zabba's romance will leave you breathless.

Based on a true story, said the last quote, in text twice the size of any of the others. No really. I saw it. I was there. -- Dan Landry.

Tip sat down sharply, landing on the floor in front of the counter. Bill let out a stream of distressed bubbles and hovered. "Oh my god," she said again. And laughed so hard she cried.
