Community Center Class: International Cuisine, Monday evening
Hannibal nodded to everyone as they showed up; he was perfectly put together, but those who knew him well enough might detect a hint of stress around his eyes. It was partly the remnants of a hangover from the party yesterday, and partly...well. There went another wedding.
"Good evening," he said once everyone who was going to show up had. "Luckily I made our reservations prior to the weekend, so we're set for dinner tonight. Our portal will actually be taking us back about half a day, because our destination is far across the world from our current location." He paused. "Or our usual location; I have no idea where the island has us now."
He shook it off and continued. "Japan's culture has endured for longer than many, and some of its culinary traditions can be traced back thousands of years. Rice and seafood are both very prevalent, as Japan is an island nation. Tonight we will be dining at Mikawa Zezankyo, a restaurant that serves tempura - seafood and vegetables, deep fried. Specifically, this one serves food in the style called Edomae tempura - tempura in the style of the Edo period, approximately one hundred fifty years ago. The chef uses traditional ingredients and techniques that would not have been out of place then."
The portal opened and he ushered everyone through to a small, mostly residential street, where they stood outside an unassuming door. "Chef Tetsuya Saotome prepares all the food himself, and he'll be standing in front of you; if you have any questions, I will be pleased to pass them on," he told them. "Neither the chef nor his assistants speak English. I will also demonstrate the use of chopsticks to those of you who've never used them; anyone else who's familiar, please help those who aren't. And when we enter, please remove your shoes and leave them by the door; it's both tradition and proper etiquette."
He looked around for questions, then led them into the restaurant.

He was a very cranky ex-Jedi.

Enter, sit, figure out the chopsticks
Re: Enter, sit, figure out the chopsticks
The chopsticks however. She made a few attempts and was beginning to worry that this would end up like a torture in Tartaros, where she would never make the food reach her mouth.
She was als trying to figure out what to say to Dr Lecter. She felt truly sorry for him and Mr Starsmore.
Re: Enter, sit, figure out the chopsticks
"Here." He held one hand out to Lucille to demonstrate. "Put one of them down for a moment, and hold the other like this."
Re: Enter, sit, figure out the chopsticks
"And the second one?"
Despite the difficulties, it was a subject preferable to failed weddings.
Re: Enter, sit, figure out the chopsticks
"Like this," he showed her. "Your first two fingers move it; the other chopstick stays perfectly still."
Re: Enter, sit, figure out the chopsticks
"Things need to be cut is small pieces," she observed.
