Community Center Class: International Cuisine, Monday evening

Hannibal greeted everyone at the portal as they gathered, then nodded to them all.

"Welcome back. To class and to two legs." Hannibal, for one, was glad of that second part. "Today we'll be visiting," somewhere normal and non-magical "Marrakech, Morocco. Morocco has been a hub of trade for centuries, and its spices and cuisine reflect that. Mediterranean and Arabic cuisines are the strongest influences, and olive oil, fruits, grains, and a number of meats, including lamb, are common."

He waved them through into the street. "We'll be dining today at Dar Cherifa, a lovely and calm oasis in the midst of the souks - the markets. It features a fairly traditional and varied menu, and I'll be ordering a number of things for you all to taste, as well as anything you may prefer to order on your own."

The street he led them into was bustling, surrounded by stalls, and very hot and dry. "The predominant languages here are Arabic and Berber, but most people will also speak French, and some will know Spanish or English," he said, raising his voice a little to be heard. "If you venture back out once we're in the restaurant, please give yourself extra time to return before our portal, as the streets are a veritable maze."

As witness the runner that led them the last few blocks to the restaurant. Hannibal tipped the man and thanked him before leading them into the restaurant and out of the heat. "If you have any questions, please feel free to ask."

Such an exotic place! Lucille took in the place around her, excited to find herself somewhere that looked just like the illustrations from a book on the Orient in her parents library. She might need to be updated on views on colonialism and orientalism. The food should match the place, shouldn't it?

Lucille looked at him, smiling back. "It is a beautiful place."

And she was no longer a dragon, but that was something she was happy to forget.

"Have you been here before?"

What would it be like, to travel? Exciting, doubtlessly, but in a way that suited her?

"I have never had the opportunity before," Lucille said. "This is quite new for me."

Kanan had seen a dozen worlds like this place in his lifetime, the markets reminding him of places that his Master had taken him, back in his Caleb days. He didn't tend to stay around markets like this one for long, mostly he just spent enough time in them to get the essentials and then take off for a cantina elsewhere if he could manage it, but there was enough different about this place, too, that he wasn't entirely put out by it all.

It was familiar, and utterly alien to him. A welcome distraction from... everything, really.

Kanan wasn't going to be doing much in the way of wandering, today. There was food in front of him, and the better part of a week spent as a feline meant that he was in a mood to rend things with his teeth.

Besides, as charming as the marketplace was, he wasn't in any hurry to go back out there, either. Not with so many things still rubbed raw that he hadn't had a chance to deal with before being turned into a cat.

There was a sort of a meatball dish with eggs on it. He was tearing into that with a gusto, contemplating whether to try the rabbit or the leg of lamb next.

"Lucky me, huh?" Kanan's expression did not look like the expression of a man who thought that he had been lucky. "You want to have a great time, try being a Loth-cat with senses like mine."

You know, the Force sensitive type.

"And then strip away most mental processes that make a creature sentient, and get handed a box to poodoo in. Not an experience I'd repeat if I had the choice."

"Thank you, Doctor," Kanan sighed, and then paused for another mouthful of meatball before continuing. "Fandom really isn't doing a great job of making me want to stick around, of course."

At this point, the only reason he was still around was because he really had nowhere else to go. But then again, they were on another one of those planets with those Krogan guys, and that reality was admittedly pretty tempting.

"Being turned into a cat? Nowhere," Kanan replied. "I'm actually pretty okay with that, too. I have all kinds of other experiences to look back on already."

And a good many to try not to think about ever again.

"Good compared to here, sure," Kanan replied. It wasn't just that he was hell-bent on hating the island, honest. It was just doing a fantastic job of messing with the relative comfort of his usual routine. And when things messed with that, disaster tended to follow after. "Being a Loth-cat wasn't so bad, I suppose. There were a lot of things going on around the island that didn't make any sense to me, and I couldn't exactly reason it all away as a tooka. I think I spent about as much time afraid as annoyed."

"Tooka," Kanan replied, and then paused. "Loth-cats are a breed of tooka. They're... maybe twice the size of your older cat. And could probably fit his head in their mouth if they felt up to giving it a try. They're also used to open spaces and don't take well to the unfamiliar. I'm willing to bet Cecil took a few pictures. He seemed pretty thrilled with the whole cat ordeal."

Large and venomous, and gravity hadn't been confused at the time!

"Loth-cats aren't easily frightened," Kanan noted, "so long as they know what to expect. But there were a lot of strange things going on last week, and smells that made no sense to a tooka's nose. It wore on from confusing to distressing pretty fast, at times."

"More or less, I suppose."

Kanan had a few complaints about a certain F-word, but he wasn't going to bring that up over dinner in public, so he just shrugged his shoulders instead.

"I can get back to dealing with the memory loss that I'd been in the process of coping with before I was interrupted."

"You had me at 'cabinet,'" Kanan admitted, smiling wryly. He wasn't going to even pretend that he had healthy coping habits. Hannibal had practically carried him home once before, after all. "I'd probably be better off taking you up on that than I would be at giving that Krogan ale another try."

Maybe he could beat it, this time!

"It's generally a lot quieter under the table," Kanan pointed out. And then he sighed. "Maybe I'll stop by your office or something anyway. I hear talking helps. I'm just not great at that sort of thing."

He didn't have much experience with it, mind.

"Even without the island making it impossible for somebody to lie?" Kanan wondered. "I'd say this was something I need to see, but really, I think you can probably guess at how I usually feel about sharing, at this point."

There was a reason he was so bad at it.

"I suppose it can't get much more difficult than that," Kanan admitted. "Short of getting into the painful details. There are... a lot of those."

He frowned, shrugged, and then made a reach for the rabbit. It was there. Why not.

"Good plan, Doctor," Kanan replied. "I intend to do exactly that."

While also contemplating a rematch between himself and the ryncol.
