The Perk, Sunday afternoon

After talking with Sparkle that morning, Peter had checked out his map, found the bank, and stopped by. It was gratifying, if still a bit surprising, to find that he still had accounts back home and that the bank here could access them.

So now, having paid the guy back for the hotel and clothes, and with a bit of money in his pocket, he strolled around the island, then stopped in the coffee shop for a hot drink.

"No, really," he told the barista, "just black coffee is fine."

A few minutes later, he was sitting at a table staring out the window and sipping his latte.

Lucille, pleased to have a normal weekend, had decided to spend the afternoon at the Perk, with a pot of tea and a novel. Being a dragon had made both reading and playing the piano difficult, and she would do the latter later in the evening.

After ordering her tea, she noticed that her favourite table by the window was occupied. Obviously it wasn't her table, but it still annoyed her. She chose the table opposite, which was still by the window, and offered the other guest a rather cold look.

Peter felt the weight of someone's gaze on him, and glanced up. then frowned a little at the look he was getting. And at the girl's old-fashioned clothes.

"Hi," he said. "Is there something wrong?" He was fairly sure he hadn't done anything, but with this place's oddities, who knew?

Lucille inclined her head slightly. "Good afternoon. And no, I believe there isn't. Is there?" Pointing out that he was sitting at her favorite table seemed childish.

"Not that I know of." Peter gave her a slightly dubious look. "But you seemed angry."

"You must be mistaken." Lucille took a sip of her tea, wondering if she should have controlled her reaction better. No, it wasn't important.

He wasn't, but okay. Maybe she'd been thinking madly about something else.

"Okay, sorry to bother you, then." He nodded and held out his hand. "Peter Octavian."

Lucille smiled again, this time politely rather than unfriendly. She took his hand. "Lucille Sharpe. It's a pleasure to meet you Mr Octavian." He wasn't a student, so she used titles.

"Peter's fine," he said. "Nice to meet you."

"Peter, then. Do you visit the Perk often?" Perhaps they had the same favorite table?

"I just got here Friday night," Peter answered. "To the island, I mean. You?"

That was the right thing to ask, right? He'd gotten a bit rusty at small talk over the last millennium.

"Oh, I see. Does the island seem strange to you yet?" Lucille's initial hostility was beginning to fade. Peter was polite and friendly, and she couldn't help notice that he was handsome as well. "I have lived here for half a year, and I visit this place regularly. They make acceptable tea."

[Sleep for me now. SP?]

"A little," Peter admitted. "Good to know about the tea. I had a hard time getting just coffee."

[Always!]

"Really? I thought coffee was more popular here," she looked at his cup. "Is there something wrong with it?"

Time for Kanan's usual afternoon coffee break ritual. Said ritual involved coming in and giving the poor barista a hard time for the fact that they continued to not carry caf.

This time, he got as far as the counter, opened his mouth, and was immediately cut off with a, "No, our supplier still hasn't shipped it. Here's your coffee."

She deposited his usual fallback on the counter, waited until he handed over a few coins, bemused, and then went back to chewing gum and reading a romance novel behind the counter.

"Tough crowd," he said, shaking his head and stepping away from the counter, looking around for a place to take a seat. "You'd think I'd annoyed her or something."

Well, Kanan...

"What did you want?" Peter asked, looking the man over. "I tried to get coffee, but..." he waved his latte.

Kanan turned a wry smile toward the new guy.

"Caf," he explained. "It's similar to coffee, something I get back home. I swear by it back home. Black coffee is about all she will give me, though."

He waved his own drink around.

"Maybe I should go and place your next order for you, huh? Just go up and ask for two cups of caf?"

"Is that the trick to it?" Peter asked. "Order something they don't have so they'll give you what you want?"

"Well, it'd work for you," Kanan replied, chuckling and shaking his head. "They do have what you want. They need to find a supplier in a different galaxy for me."

He made his way over and offered the other man a handshake.

"Kanan Jarrus. And you're new?"

He had that shiny new 'never turned into a pony' feel about him.

"Peter Octavian." he shook Kanan's hand. "I just got here, if that's what you mean." He wasn't going to ask about the different galaxy; he was learning that sort of thing seemed pretty usual around here.

"That's more or less what I mean," Kanan agreed easily. "I'm pretty new to this place myself. That said, I've been here long enough that I know that I'm never getting my hands on proper caf so long as I'm stuck here."

And all was tragedy.

"So, what brings you to the island, Peter?"

Peter snorted. Where to start? "A demon, a portal, a bit of desperation."

Kanan blinked.

"Well, that sounds like a hell of a story," he replied. "I have experience with the portal thing, but the demon part is new."

Peter grimaced. "Be thankful. They're...unpleasant."

To put it mildly.

"And yet you're here," Kanan mused, making himself comfortable in the seat across from Peter. "Which means you're either more lucky, or more dangerous."

He was wearing an ever so casual smile as he said it, though there was a calculating look in his eye, assessing the man before him. There wasn't anything openly hostile about it. It was just... Kanan was a strategist at heart. And a survivor.

Peter could appreciate that look; he wore it often enough himself. He nodded to Kanan. "A bit of both, plus I had a lot of friends on my side."
