Community Center Class: International Cuisine, Monday evening

Once again, those people showing up for class would be shown through the portal, Hannibal meeting them on the other side, on one side of a wide street where it was refreshingly dark and pleasantly cool. "Good evening," he said, nodding calmly. "I thought you might all enjoy something somewhat less bright and sweltering."

He spread his arms to gesture around them. "Welcome to Lima, Peru. The primary language here is Spanish; I speak it, and I imagine some of you may as well; please speak up so the others will know they can use you as a resource. Peru's standard cuisine owes much to a number of immigrant groups in the area; the restaurant we'll be visiting pares down some of those influences and focuses on local ingredients and flavors from the Amazon rainforest. The chef has researched quite a bit, and formed relationships with local suppliers that enable him to offer a wide variety."

Frankly, Kanan didn't much care about the food either way, yet. He'd gotten to a point on the island where 'too hot to be hungry' had been starting to strike, and while he'd feel more up to it once the cool air had a chance to settle him, right about then he was more interested in the fact that he could look around without his eyes protesting vehemently.

Another week, a lot of what looked like things that had been pulled out of the water again. Earth really liked its seafood, apparently. Kanan wasn't complaining, of course. The meal was clearly made with the climate in mind, and he was less overheated and quite happy to sample a little bit of everything. That was there.

"Well, the island is trying to compensate with some sort of canopy," Kanan offered, giving Hannibal a bit of a nod. "But yeah, three suns. The most I've seen sharing a system with a planet that's even remotely inhabitable is two, in my time on Kaller. In person, anyway. There are 3.2 billion habitable star systems in my home galaxy, and over double that many habitable stars, so there must be more somewhere."

It was a lot to keep track of. Kanan knew space fairly well, but come on.

"Honestly, we could be eating anything here, and I'd still be thrilled for the chance to spend an hour or two in a place with actual evening. The fact that the food is so good is really just a bonus."

This was said as Kanan reached for another helping of shrimp, mind.

After the past few days, Kanan was pretty sure that sun was overrated anyhow. And after that place where the sun screamed all the time, he was trying to figure out the appeal of Earth, too.

"I guess if I'm going to be stuck on even one chunk of your planet, flying around the multiverse, it can't hurt to know more about it," he mused. "I mean, if you don't mind doing that sort of legwork, I'm willing to learn. Understanding more about this place can't hurt anything. That said, the moment we stop somewhere resembling home, I'm out of here. I wouldn't want you wasting your time, either."

Yeah, he was still hoping to bail on this place.

Oh, definitely. Mon Cala alone had two sentient species that traveled the galaxy, and then others besides that were a little less mobile. And that was just one planet out of billions.

So.

"Well, then I'd be interested in learning what I can," Kanan decided. "If it's no trouble."

Rarely better or worse as a species, true, but different, certainly. It depended on whose standards you were using, most likely.

"History is a dirty place," Kanan allowed. "I've studied no small amount of conflict in the past. My galaxy's been a very bloody place from time to time."

Take, for example, the last decade.

"It's the nature of people to do those things," Kanan agreed, returning that smile with a wry one of his own. "I'm sure there were things in the library back home that would have interested you. It's a shame there's no going back to it."

Not just because the island was being greedy, either.

"I'm not going to hold my breath hoping that it'll be in my lifetime," Kanan replied, "but if it does come to that, I'll be sure to send you an invite, Doctor."
