Mr. Bubbles had decided to accompany her, which was probably for the best, since he was one of her calmer, more comforting toys, and Alluka had a terrible headache today.

She did what she was supposed to, to open the store, and then she curled up at the counter and moped and hoped she felt better soon. It seemed like a terrible waste of fun to not feel up to playing with all of the clothes.

Mr. Bubbles put up with being hugged rather too tightly and she loved him a lot for that too.

Talking with Margaery yesterday about clothes had Ringo thinking that a trip by Demon Marcus for herself might be in order. She didn't really need anything in particular, but looking around might remind her of things she needed to suggest to her new little sibling.

Of course, then she realized that Alluka was at work today, and got a bit distracted. "Oh, Alluka! Hi! I missed you at the picnic."

Alluka's headache was not really any better, so while she brightened to see Ringo, it was a pale imitation of her usual brightness.

"Hi, Ringo!" she said. "I missed a picnic?"

Look, time was hard to keep track of.

"Uh huh. There was one on Saturday. I saved you some--" She frowned suddenly because Alluka, well, didn't look quite like her usual self. Ringo took a couple of steps over toward the other girl.

"Are you okay?"

"My head hurts," Alluka said sulkily.

"Awww." Ringo reached out a hand toward Alluka's forehead, wondering if the other girl had a fever or anything like that.

"Did you take any medicine for it?"

"I had tea," she said, leaning into Ringo's touch. She wasn't feverish, though Alluka wouldn't be able to tell that. "And cookies."

Those fixed headaches, right?

"Well, the tea was a good start." Ringo offered a gentle smile as she pressed her hand against Alluka's skin. "No fever, either. Which is also good. But it still hurts?"

She didn't want to push an aspirin on the other girl, but if she was hurting, Ringo had painkillers in her bag.

"Yes," she said, still moping. "But, but I came into work anyway."

In itself, that was a huge thing for Alluka.

Ringo smiled, very lightly ruffling Alluka's hair. "That's very responsible of you," she said encouragingly. "Would you like some aspirin or something?" She was already unslinging her bag and reaching in to find the little bottle she kept. "It might help with some of the pain."

"What's an aspirin?" Alluka asked curiously. "It gets rid of the pain?"

What? It wasn't like Alluka had ever used them before or had a chance to get her hands on any.

By now Ringo had gotten sort of used to Alluka not knowing things she thought most people did, so she just pulled out the bottle and twisted off the cap. "It's a type of medicine that can help with little aches and pains. Like headaches and stuff like that."

She shook two pills into her hand and held them out. "You want to try and see if it helps with yours?"

Alluka took them and looked at them dubiously.

They were terribly small to do battle against the pain in her head.

"Do, do I chew them?"

But still, she'd try them.

"Oh, um, no." Ringo looked around. "Do you have any tea left? You should probably have them with something to drink."

"I always have tea," Alluka protested. "You can't get through the day without at least one tea party, Ringo."

Or three, or four.

In any case, there was a kettle on the back counter.

Ringo laughed. "You're right." She stood up. "A cup for each of us, then?"

"Yes, please," Alluka said, rubbing at her eyes and then showing Mr. Bubbles the pills.

He sniffed at them curiously.

It only took a minute before Ringo was back with two cups. She sat down on the floor near Alluka and held one out for her. "So what you need to do is put the pills on your tongue, and then drink the tea so that you swallow the pills."

She made an apologetic expression. "Sorry that they don't taste very good."

Alluka took the tea and did as she was told, making a face as she got the taste of the pills on her tongue.

She sipped her tea again, hoping that would banish the taste.

"Can't they make them taste good?" she asked.

Ringo blinked as she sipped her own tea. "Huh. I, um, don't know." She'd never really considered that.

"Maybe? But if they could, why didn't they already?"

"I don't know," Alluka said, all big eyes. "Ringo, that's why I asked you."

Ringo smiled and shrugged a bit helplessly. "Well, I guess I don't know, either. Sorry."

"It's okay," Alluka said, snuggling Mr. Bubbles. "You know a lot of things, so it's okay if you don't know everything."

"Thanks." Ringo grinned and sipped her tea. "So it'll take a couple of minutes to start working, and it might not make things stop hurting entirely, but you should feel a little bit better soon."

At least Ringo hoped so.

So did Alluka.

"Thank you," she said, smiling a little. "For, for helping me. Does everyone have stuff like that on them?"

"Hmm." Ringo considered that. "Not everyone? I mean, most people probably keep some aspirin or something like it in their room. But not everyone carries it around with them."

"Should I keep some?" Alluka wondered.

"Well, I don't know. Do you get headaches like this very often? Because, I mean, if you want, you can always call or text me to come help out if you're feeling bad." Sometimes company was better than medicine, anyway.

"Not a lot," Alluka said, since they didn't seem that frequent to her. "And, and what if you can't come? Shouldn't I know what to do if I have to be with just my toys."

Which wasn't really alone but, at the same time, her toys hadn't known about medicine either.

"That's a good point," Ringo allowed. "But you also have to be careful with medicine. If you have too much of it, it can make you feel worse instead of better."

She considered that for a moment. "You want to try to learn about some? So that you can do it on your own?"

"Would it be a good thing to learn?" she asked, and then frowned.

"How, how can a good thing make you feel bad?"

"Well, you know how if you eat way too many cookies you can get a tummy ache? It's sort of like that."

It wasn't really like that at all, Ringo.

"I guess so," she said dubiously.

Her tummy never hurt after cookies or chocolate no matter the quantity. ~~Zoldyck genes!~~

"So medicine is cookies for some people?"

Look what you'd done, Ringo.

"I don't know if I'd say that?" Ringo said, backpedaling a bit, and trying to figure out how to explain things properly.

Alluka giggled, realizing that her head did feel a bit better.

Ringo had to grin at that. "Sorry that I'm not very good at explaining things," she said.

Funny. It wasn't all that long ago that she wouldn't have been able to admit that particular weakness.

"You're good at explaining AirTrek," Alluka said loyally.

But, well, she did get terrible confused on just about every other matter when Ringo explained.

"Well, that's reassuring. I'd hate to think that I was bad at explaining that."

"Oh, also, I saved you some cookies from the picnic. You should swing by sometime to get some."

"At any time?" Alluka asked happily. "Thank you, Ringo, for thinking of me!"

"Sure!" Ringo grinned. "You know you're always welcome to swing by my room whenever you want. We can have tea or something."

Ringo's new roommate would probably just love that.

"We could have a tea party," Alluka said happily, "since tea and cookies and people to talk to are the most important parts of it."

"You're right," Ringo agreed with a nod.

"We can have tea, and then go out and do some AirTrek or something if you want."

I only have to make it through this week and then I'm off for two. I hope this week goes by quickly.
