Luke's, Monday
So. Not only had Eliot seen an entire rickshaw full of rowdy, boozy squirrels joyriding through town to the causeway yesterday, there also wasn't any radio broadcast this morning. He tried checking the website the archived that broadcasts in podcast version, but there were no updates there, either. The diner staff had all sorts of conspiracy theories cooked up.
"I heard there's a new teacher with a dog's head," the dishwasher said. "And he chased them off."
"Well, I heard they've gone on strike," said the busboy. "They're demanding higher quality booze."
"It's the slow death of the traditional news media," one of the servers declared.
"You're all wrong," the cook said firmly. "They've gone on a semester long road trip vacation across America." He gestured to the gathered gossiping staff with a greasy spatula. "To hunt for aliens!"
"There are literally already plenty of aliens on this island." Eliot snatched the spatula from the cook with a glare. "And whatever the squirrels are up to ain't none of our business. Now. We gonna actually work today, or are we going to gossip?"
The staff all stood and stared at him plaintively. Eliot rubbed his forehead.
"What?"
". . . Without the squirrels, this is the only way to spread the island news," said the busboy.
"Back," Eliot said. "To. Work."
