Covent Garden Flowers, Friday

Peter had an actual employee starting today, which meant he supposed he should get ready. Which mostly meant making sure that his notes and accounting system made sense to anybody sane, and not just him.

Assuming Khadgar was sane, but he had seemed fairly level-headed.

Apart from that, there were flowers and plants set out in a nice display that he hoped made the autumn day seem a bit brighter.

He had no idea about extra people on the island, but it wasn't as though his father was going to show up, anyway. Emperor Constantine had been dead a few centuries.

Khadgar didn't have anyone visiting him either, and this was a nice distraction from that fact. He got to the flower shop nice and early and waved at Peter as he came inside. "Oh, this place looks nice. I've only peeked in through the window before," he said in greeting.

"Thanks," Peter said, smiling back. "When I got to the island, it was more jungle than anything in here, and I started cleaning it up just for something to do. Apparently that means I own it now."

Because Fandom.

"Considering how much effort that must have been, ownership might be a just reward. I'm imagining you with some sort of sword chopping through foliage and dodging jungle animals." After a moment, he added, "Wait, was there anything alive in here?"

Because, again, Fandom.

Peter laughed. "Apart from the plants? Only a few lizards and bugs. I shooed out as many as I could."

He stepped over to a healthy-looking plant with tendrils across the entire window. "This guy was doing really well. I hated to cut him back too much." He tugged lightly on one of the leaves. "Some of these others are cuttings from him."

"I can see how much care you've put into some of these," Khadgar said, touching one of the arrangements gently. "It's nice to know that you're trusting me with them too. Thankfully, I was right and the library had a lot of books about plants." He opened his messenger bag and pulled out a few of the ones he'd found, because any excuse to look at books was good for him.

"Oh, good." Peter came over to look; he was old-fashioned enough that he still preferred books, too. "Have you found anything useful yet, or did you just grab things that looked good for now?"

"I mostly grabbed books about things that will grow well in this region of the world, and what kind of flowers might be popular for upcoming holidays," Khadgar said. "Apparently, you all have a celebration at the end of October that sounds a lot like something I had at home - Halloween?"

"Halloween's an interesting holiday," Peter said. "It's mostly fun these days, though." He paused. "Or at least it was a couple decades ago. I don't think it would've changed. What's your holiday like?"

"Oh, Hallow's End is a very important holiday," Khadgar said with a solemn expression. "It's the time of year when children get candy from every adult they can find, and then eat it until they get sick."

He managed a straight face for at least another moment before cracking up.

"Very similar, then." Peter laughed. "The one here's a combination of a few different harvest and memorial holidays, but it involves a lot of pretend scares and a ton of candy."

He looked around. "I'm not sure how we can translate that into flowers, but I'm sure there's some way."
