Parents' Weekend Field Day, Saturday Afternoon, The Lawn

The weather was a little cloudy, but the temperature was just right. The decorations on the lawn were colorful and bright, inviting students, teachers, townies and their guests alike to come join the fun on the lawn, where a series of team activities had been set up for some light competition.

Okay, finding the rose yesterday had been weird. Finding out the first rose, from February, was still in good shape? Even weirder.

But whatever. Dante didn't have work today, so here he was, stalking out onto the lawn in jeans and a grey tank, eyeing the area. Disregarding the games in favor of trying to determine if there was any food anywhere.

What? It wasn't like he had any family.

Well, he might not have any family, but how would he like to deal with the worst robot in the world?

"Greetings!" Claptrap said, finally trying to approach one of the locals. Maybe they could explain what the actual fuck was going on here.

Was that... a giant triangle? Robot? Or a camera or something? Dante squinted at him.

"...The fuck are you?"

That wasn't nice.

Well, it was on par with the normal reactions to him, so...

"I am a CL4P-TP general purpose robot, but you can call me Claptrap!"

Dante blinked.

Then he snickered. "Claptrap?" he said, his brain going somewhere terrible. "You're shitting me."

"I'm really not capable of it!" Thank you for taking that literally, Claptrap.

"What, you're telling me robots don't poop?"

Dante, no.

"No, but I am programmed to feel psychosomatic hunger pains!" Claptrap assured him cheerfully. "It's horrifying!"

... You know, it was really hard to figure out if this thing was serious, considering how happy it sounded. "Go you?" Dante offered.

After a beat.

And some interesting confused eyebrow gymnastics.

"I know I sound upbeat about it, but it's just my default tone of voice! I'm really quite depressed!"

Yep, the exclamation point at the end of each sentence was necessary to express that.

At least Claptrap was using words Dante actually knew now? There was that.

"Ye~eeeah."

(The tilde was also necessary in this case.)

"That sucks, buddy?"

Shrug. So much shrug.

The tilde was always necessary, Dante.

"Thanks! It really does indeed!"

Dante eyed the robot.

Dante eyed the robot critically.

"...Can you at least get drunk?"

Why did you talk, Dante?

"I cannot!" Really, Dante? Really?

He had to know! Maybe there were boozy oil changes or something!

"Fuck, man," Dante said sympathetically. "They could have at least programmed that or whatever."

Too bad he didn't know computer stuff.

Isabela showed up with a grin and an (also grinning) elf in tow. "Dante, look who I've got!"

Dante turned-- and smirked. "Zevran," he called, "Hey man, glad to see you!"

You could tell by the smirk. It was a little dirty.

As well it should be, considering the lovely evening they'd had last time they'd met.

"Always a pleasure," Zevran said. "As it happens I was just telling Isabela what wonderful taste in friends she has."

"He met Ada yesterday," Isabela supplied helpfully.

Dante grinned. "She's awesome, isn't she?" he said. "Did you guys have fun?"

He didn't need to eyebrow-waggle. It was all there in his tone.

"She made a favourable impression on my boy here," Isabela replied with uncommon discretion ~~because the thread hadn't got that far~~.

"Truly, this island has some of the most charming people on it." And not enough time for Zevran to meet them all properly. Woe.

"Maybe you should come here longer," Dante said brightly. Three guesses which word he was putting his emphasis on. "Check them all out."

Guessing wasn't that hard (heh).

"It would help me get the lay of the land."

"Really get to grips with it," Dante agreed.

"Luckily there's lots of people here willing to lend a helping hand," Isabela added.

"A reach-around, even." Dante, stop.

... Isabela was here. You weren't going to stop.

Nothing but innuendoes, forever.

"I do so love a situation with a happy ending."

"Y'know," Dante said. "This has been a gripping story, but I could go for one of those endings right now."

Of course you could.

Was anyone really surprised by that? At all?

"By an amazing coincidence so could I," Zevran said with feigned surprise. "Isabela?"

Was it possible to both smirk and roll your eyes? Turns out it was. "I'm sure I could come around to the idea."

Cassandra's roommate was currently a moth. And she expected no family of any stripe.

Still, it was hard to continue her usual exercise regimen with this... event taking up so much space. She walked outside and surveyed it all.

"Ugh."

Ada arrived, reluctantly trailing behind Duncan. "Where's Uncle Chester?"

"Finding your teachers."

"NO."

"Yes--Ada, no, you're staying here."

Who needed games when you had ~~sibling~~ cousin squabbling to do?
