There… there was a fishy!

As soon as Alluka, and Mr. Bubbles, spotted their newest friend hanging out in a tiny fish tank, they made a beeline for it.

Hopefully the fishy wouldn't mind the two of them staring at it for a good, long while.

Alluka wasn't quite sure what to do. Fishies weren't very talkative. Was she supposed to feed it? How was she supposed to cuddle it?

After a whispered consultation with Mr. Bubbles, Alluka went looking for a dress so that she could match Milady. It was only the mannerly thing to do!

And, no, she didn't know if that was the fishy's real name. Or if the fishy was even a girl. But that was the name she was going to call it by until someone told her differently.

Dante... hadn't spoken in Alluka in some time. And he was bored. But not that kind of bored.

So that was the door to Demon Marcus swinging open. "Yo, Alluka?" he called. "You still on shift?"

Alluka was pondering between two dresses when Dante came in. She carefully set them down, since she wasn't sure which was closer to Milady's colouring, and picked up Mr. Bubbles to go see who it was.

"Dante! Hi, hi!"

She hadn't seen him for awhile, so she was going to try and hug him.

Sorry, Dante.

Whoop. That was definitely a hug.

"...Up," Dante finished, awkwardly patting her on the head.

She beamed up at him, so that was the correct response to her hug. Then, because Dante wasn't like Killua, who'd let her cling, she let him go.

"We got a fishy!" she said, pleased. "I was looking for clothes to match, since you can't pet a fishy, can you?"

She didn't know. No one had ever let her near fish before. Except dead ones, to eat.

"I've named the fish Milady."

Sparkle hadn't approved of this name yet, but Alluka was skimming over that pesky detail.

"Come see!" She wasn't going to drag him, but she was going to bounce in that direction with the expectation of being followed.

"Aren't fish real slippery?" said Dante, who'd have made a dirty joke if she was anyone else. Instead he ambled after her. "So yeah, definitely not pettable."

"I've never had a fish," she said reasonably. "Maybe they like slippery pettings. Kittens and puppies like hugs, so why not fish?"

"Aaaaallluuuka," Ringo sing-songed as she stepped into the shop and looked around. "Are you heeeeere?"

She was kind of sticky from a really hard AT run, which she'd sort of skipped lunch to extend. She lifted a big paper bag over her head and waved it. "I brought foooood."

Alluka came out of the stacks looking happy.

"You, you brought lunch?"

Lunch was great!

Ringo grinned. "There you are." She waved her bag again.

"And I brought lunch as long as you like curry. Otherwise," she shot the other girl a teasing look, "there's nothing in here."

It wasn't chocolate, but not much was really.

A beat.

"Would it really disappear if I didn't?" That would be pretty neat.

"Nooo," Ringo giggled. "I'd just have to eat it all by myself."

So it was sort of like disappearing.

It had been too long since Anders saw Alluka, but that was only half the reason he was there. The other half had to do with an enormous ink stain that had appeared (or so it seemed, anyhow) on a certain favored red sweater sometime since last winter.

"Hi," he called from the door, and then wandered over to the fish. "Oh, you got a goldfish! What's its name? And where are the sweaters?"


... yes, he could have answered one of these questions on his own.

"Anders!" Was he okay with getting a hug? She was going to try anyway. "Hi, hi!"

Alluka beamed as she looked at the fish. "That's Milady." Sparkle was going to have a heck of a time changing the fish's name at this rate, since he didn't know she'd named it. But Shannon's fine with the name. "I can show you where the sweaters are. Are you buying for yourself?"

Anders was always okay with Alluka hugs, so he returned it easily. "Hi," he said, a bit of a laugh in his voice, "and hi, Milady. Is she royalty? Should I bow?"

He was not going to bow to a fish. (Well, probably not.) But it seemed worth making the offer.

"And yes, it's for me," he added, stepping back. "My nice red one has ink all over the front. I swear it wasn't there when I put it away."

"Stains are mean that way," Alluka said, nodding wisely. "And sneaky! Like, like ninja."

A beat.

"I never thought of bowing to Milady," she added. "Do you think it should be a thing people do for her?"

Alluka didn't know if the fish was a boy fish or a girl fish either. Oh well.

Anders didn't know how to tell a boy goldfish from a girl goldfish anyhow, and wasn't sure it mattered.

"Why not?" he said. "It'd make her day a little more interesting."

Sparkle was totally here to check on the fish. He was a good fish. A pretty fish. A fish that, so far as he knew, needed to be fed every day, and this gave him an excuse to leave the apartment, right?

Of course right.

But he gave Alluka a little grin and a nod hello as he entered the shop, too, because she was way better company than... Mister Fish. Betta Ray Bill? Kilgore?

Alluka put the dresses she was (still) debating over down and beamed at him.

"Hi, hi!" she carolled. "Are you here to see Milady?"

Lookit that, Sparkle! She'd named your fish for you.

Well, no. She wasn't tiny and fishy and prone to making nests out of bubbles.

"I could be," she said, "but, but Milady's a fish! She was on the counter today."

Her fish tank now had a bow tied around it too. Alluka had wanted Milady to feel at home and fashionable.

Poor Fishbob. How could Fishy McFishface see past the bow?

"Oh, is that so?" Sparkle looked over at the tank, and then gave a delighted laugh. "I see you've given her a name and everything, huh?"

Yes, Sparkle knew that the pretty bettas were technically the males. But if Alluka and Milady had an accord, here, then who the hell was he to purposefully misgender a fish?
