The Woods in the Preserve, Friday Afternoon

Karla could sense new people on the island; new minds brimming with life and vitality. Slow, stupid minds that hadn't yet grasped the horrors that were waiting for them in the dark. What a pity. Soon so many of them would die, prey for the predators on the island. As one of those predators, Karla smiled--with her real face, not the soft, fleshy one she put on for company.

And then started getting ready for company. So many scrambling new people, frightened and disturbed by the dark, dreariness around them. And so she set new webs, tangled ones, making her section of the woods seem less grim, just a shade brighter. Not too much, or the trap would be obvious, but the kind of thing that would make people move towards her without thinking about it, shift left instead of right, head down instead of up. The kind of decision that seemed random but was influenced by hundreds of subconscious factors. And beyond those webs, she laid her real ones, the thick and fibrous ones, sticky, the kind that clung and wrapped and held until she decided to come out and relieve her pantry of its burden.

Come to her, little insects. Karla was hungry.

Allu-Nika wasn't much of an insect, though they were even tinier than Karla's usual prey. But they were much the same, while also not being anything alike, so Allu-Nika wasn't worried about being eaten--as if anything could eat them!--when they wandered into Karla's area, giggling a two-toned hello.

Wasn't it fun? Wasn't this great? New people, old people, good mornings and good nights!

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-09 02:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Exuberantly, they waved a feather at Karla, gesturing wildly with it. It was a present, see? See? A playmate had given it to them!

Then they mimed a kick--that sent them spinning around in the air, much to their delight--and giggled more.

Yesterday had been a good day, even if they'd gotten the order of events wrong.

They drifted closer, offering Karla the feather to inspect. Pretty, wasn't it?

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-09 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
They watched the feather, and mostly only the feather intently. They didn’t want to lose it, now, and Karla was sometimes mean, sometimes nice.

Always interesting, though, which was why Allu-Nika kept coming back. They hated being bored.

Making an inquiring noise, they pointed at the places beyond Karla’s territory. Out there? They wanted someone from out there?

That’d be awfully hard. Allu-Nika’s attention span was pretty terrible.

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-09 05:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That... that didn't sound quite fair.

But the idea of a present, a shiny thing, was an alluring one.

They made a questioning noise, pointing at their feather. It was theirs.

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-09 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
They flailed at her, incoherently chagrined.

But… but… their feather!

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-09 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah--ah--ah! They spun in a loop, avoiding the sticky-bad-wrong thing that was completely unfun.

With another flail of their arms (how dare she?!), and an imperious stamp of their feet (she had better keep her promise!), they floated in quickly to pat their feather and then moved even quicker to pat Karla's face (fine, fine, they would do what she wanted) and then flew off.

Their giggling had started up again before they ever made it out of the clearing.

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-10 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Victory! Victory was theirs! (http://fandomtownies.livejournal.com/7957848.html?thread=289843032#t289843032) They were going to get their feather back!

Allu-Nika was still suppressing their giggles as they made their way through the preserve, making a big point of hiding and a show of listening carefully. To Karla, in Karla's den they'd rung the happy sound of tiny little bells since Karla would know what that meant.

And hopefully she wouldn't show until the girl, Ringo, was closer to the den, closer to one of the big, sticky webs.

Allu-Nika hid behind another tree, peering around it, then looked back at Ringo to make sure she was still there.

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-10 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ringo was moving slower and slower as they got deeper in among the trees. "Um," she said quietly, "are you sure that there's someone out here who needs help?"

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-10 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Karla needed help! She was hungry!

They waved for Ringo to be silent, gesturing wildly even as they nodded, making the crying faces again.

They were almost there! So close!

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-10 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Except Ringo's movements were almost a crawl now. "This, um, this doesn't feel right," she muttered, more to herself than to anyone in particular, but still loud enough to be heard.

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-10 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
But look, the woods were getting a little brighter, warmer. More comforting! Wasn't that a good thing?

They floated back to pat at the girl reassuringly.
soniaroadsqueen: (pensive)

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-10 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it was reassuring. Ringo even perked up a bit without realizing it, and it had her following along a little bit longer before any doubts began to gnaw at her again. "If someone were hurt, wouldn't we have seen a sign, or heard them, or something by now?"

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-10 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
Allu-Nika shook their heads, floating over to a tree and gently hitting their heads against it then floating down to the ground and laying there, flat, for a moment, before they sat up again and looked anxiously at Ringo.

Not awake, see?
soniaroadsqueen: (seriously)

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-10 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Unconscious?" Well, that made sense.

"Maybe we should hurry, then?" The sooner she found whoever it was, the sooner she could get out.

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-10 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! The more they hurried, the more likely they were to get their feather!

Allu-Nika nodded and sped up a little, still making sure to dart from tree to tree, so that the girl would think she was being sneaky and safe and good.

They were almost at Karla's den.

The extra speed actually helped Ringo relax a bit. Moving faster made her feel like it'd be over more quickly. Besides, she liked moving fast as a general rule.

And she was remembering some of the little tricks you needed to use to make AirTrek work properly out in nature like this. It was much better suited to hard surfaces like concrete, but dirt and trees had their own sorts of hard surfaces.

"Are we getting close?" she asked hopefully.

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-10 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
They pointed insistently in front of them, ducking around another tree and then coming to a stop. Not far in front of them was a cave, mouth gaping, though with all the illusions around to brighten the area and to make it seem more reassuring, the cave looked pretty harmless, it really did.

Allu-Nika flew in tight, anxious little circles.

In there. That was where the hurt person was.
soniaroadsqueen: (pensive)

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-10 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Inside the cave?" Ringo eyed it. Well, it did look sort of inviting. Maybe someone was using it as a hidey-hole? It might be safer in there where you could see what was coming than out here in the open, after all.

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-10 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
They nodded and approached the cave, bobbing along in the air. If they went first, maybe the girl wouldn't be so suspicious of the nice, friendly cave.

Besides, Karla couldn't eat her. It would be very bad if she tried.

So this was okay!

Allu-Nika checked to make sure the girl was still following and then ducked just inside the cave.
soniaroadsqueen: (seriously)

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-10 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Despite her concern for whoever might be hurt (what if it was someone she knew?), and how nice things looked, Ringo still moved slowly and carefully.

But she was following, she could hear and feel the ground beneath her wheels change from grass and dirt and fallen leaves to hard stone as she crossed the threshold.

"I hope it's not too far."

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-10 05:29 pm (UTC)(link)
They were so, so close to getting their feather back! Their feather!

They made a distressed noise and did a loop around Ringo's head, fluttering deeper into the cave.
soniaroadsqueen: (seriously)

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-11 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Well, weak cries for help did sort of get Ringo's attention. "Hold on!" she yelled into the cave. "I'm coming!"

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-11 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Where are you?" Ringo called out. The way the sound echoed in the cave made it sort of hard to pinpoint the source of any noise.
soniaroadsqueen: (Default)

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-11 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
"What-- what happened to you?" Ringo called, slowing down slightly as she got deeper and the light from the entrance did less and less to dispel the shadows inside the cave.
soniaroadsqueen: (straight at you)

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-11 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, no! That was horrible! "How long have you been stuck in here?" Ringo asked worriedly as she wove among a couple of stalagmites.

As for the webbing, it was too thin for Ringo to really notice it, and she was too focused ahead of her to really think about how quickly things seemed to be getting dark.

It wasn't Allu-Nika's fault, it really wasn't!

But hiding their giggling took a lot of work, since it was their usual state of being, and they only had so much attention span.

Besides, they'd gotten someone here. They'd done what Karla had wanted.

Their giggling burst out, uncontrollable and sinister and cheerfully malicious in the near total dark.
soniaroadsqueen: (straight at you)

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-12 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. So Ringo wasn't a huge horror movie fan, but she'd seen enough to know that faces floating up out of the darkness like that were not a good thing. And the giggling? Definitely not doing anything to reassure her.

She scrambled back a couple of feet, on the defensive as she tried to get a better look at whatever it was that had been pretending to be hurt.

[identity profile] trulyshelved.livejournal.com 2016-12-13 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Allu-Nika's giggling turned into a delighted squeal as they caught their prizes.

Cuddling their feather against their body, they inspected the lace happily, giving a little chirp in thanks before fading out of the cave.

Some of Karla's webs were scary, after all, and while they might come back and play after Ringo was dead, they had more important things to be concerned with.

Namely, feathers and lace.

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-14 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Can I convince you to just let me go?" Ringo asked, eyes hardening slightly.

She pressed her heels back, setting her ATs internal motors spinning. Because she was pretty sure she knew the answer to that one.
soniaroadsqueen: (unleashed)

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-14 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Ringo rather suspected that there wasn't much point in negotiating further.

Without moving otherwise, Ringo twisted her ankle slightly and sent a sharpened ribbon of steel whipping toward the giant spider-woman fast enough for it to crack out a little sonic boom. Once it was in motion, she began rolling backward, hoping she could get to the cave's exit, but not willing to take her eyes off the monster in front of her.

She wasn't really sure what she expected, which was why she did it. She wasn't inclined to get into a fight she could avoid, but she did need to know what her chances were if she was going to formulate any sort of plan.
soniaroadsqueen: (straight at you)

[personal profile] soniaroadsqueen 2016-12-14 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Ringo's eyes widened slightly. Sure, she hadn't been all that confident that her little attack would do anything, but she also hadn't expected to be unable to even see what had blocked it. The spider must be fast.

She twisted slightly and surged off to one side, trying to dodge that lunge. And then she spun back the way she'd came in and accelerated toward the exit. Except hadn't there been more light coming in when she'd arrived? She hadn't been inside for that long, so why did it seem like less of the light from outside was making it in?
