Covent Garden Flowers, Sunday

So, there were apparently new people in town. Did new people need flowers? Did old people need flowers to welcome them? What that even a thing?

Peter had no clue, but that along with the new year seemed as good an excuse as any to open the shop and open the doors in the fairly warm weather and let the scents of green things, flowers, and herbs lure people in to buy things.

After a bit of thought, Peter dragged an old sandwich board out of the back and set it up in front, writing: Happy new year! Sale on flowers to brighten your days, houseplants half off to anyone moving in!

There was also still a smaller sign in the window: Now hiring!
The shop was open!

Lucille needed flowers to brighten her mood. She was pleased to be back in Fandom and to see Cassandra again, but spending just those few days with Thomas had left her achingly aware ho much she missed him when they were apart.

So, flowers. Cassandra might appreciate them too. Lucille entered the shop.

"Hi there." Peter smiled and waved. "Welcome back. Happy new year."

"Happy new year." Lucille gave him a small smile in return. "I thought I needed new flowers for the new year."

"You've come to the right place, then." Peter smiled. "Anything in particular this time?"

[crimson_sister]

"I think I would like white lilies again."

Some people had a funereal taste.

[2_old_for_this]

Hey, it was her...well, taste.

"Sure." Peter headed for the lilies. "Anything else this time to go with them?"

[crimson_sister]

Lucille thought for a moment. "Red roses perhaps?"

She had a great taste.

Love and death; why not?

"Sure." Peter selected a few of the lilies and handed them to her for inspection while he led the way toward the roses. "We've got a few different reds, actually."

Love and death went well together, Lucille thought.

Lucille leaned close to the lilies and drew in the scent. She gave a small nod. "I like these. Perhaps a darker red for the roses."

"How's this?" He showed her one that the catalogue had told him was a 'Red Paris' rose.

[crimson_sister]

"It's beautiful," Lucille said matter-of-factly. "It will go well with the lilies."

She added after moment: "Don't you agree?"

"They're a good contrast," Peter answered. "I might add a bit of greenery for variety, though."

He'd mostly given up trying to suggest Lucille add other flowers.

That was probably a good thing. Not that Lucille would take offense, but Peter probably wasn't going to be successful.

"Greenery? That would suit them."

At least some of his suggestions were appreciated.

"Okay, let me see what I can find." He glanced back and forth between the flowers and the greenery a bit as he chose several things he thought would work - mostly dark green, with a bit of variegation - then brought them back and held out his hands for the flowers. "May I?"

"Of course." Lucille gave him the flowers. She had to admit he had good taste, even if she guessed he would have made a different choice of flowers.

Peter'd make a lot of different choices, but hey, these were Lucille's flowers.

He tucked in some dark green fern and a bit of variegated greenery to set it off, then arranged it all and presented it back to her. "Would you like a ribbon?"
