The Perk, Saturday Morning

What did you do when your father returned from the dead? They had agreed not to spend this short time arguing about the choices they both had made, but that left them with the fact that they didn't know each other. Oh, Leto knew his father's memories, but that was not the same as knowing him as a father, or rather the man who had never been a father to him. Paul Atreides didn't know his son at all, and his blindness prevented him from even seeing him.

In this situation clearly the best choice was to take his father to the Perk and offer him coffee and cake. Because what else could he do?

"You offer me cake?" Paul Atreides said. His voice was hoarse, and he sounded more unimpressed than surprised.

"It isn't bad," Leto replied, ignoring the implied criticism of his choice. "This is a small island, and there isn't much you can see, is there?"

If his father was going to be complaining he could just as well have that rubbed in.

Paul snorted. "Trying to be funny doesn't suit an Atreides."

He clearly didn't know his children.

"So, what brought you to this place?"

Leto sipped his coffee, ignoring his father's comment and responding to the question. "Irulan sent me here to go to school. It was a well-kept secret that she was a student here once herself and she felt I needed some time in a place where I was not a future Emperor and the son of Muad'dib."

Carefully letting his hand explore the table to find the fork, Paul said: "She should have let her wisdom flourish before that, not her jealousy."

Leto guided his father's hand. "Her kindness is stronger than her jealousy ever was," he said softly. "She is now a teacher to my daughter."

"A daughter? I thought..." They had both known that after the transformation had begun children were no longer a possibility.

"Yes, a daughter. Time runs strangely in this place. I hadn't predicted her. Her name is Hania."

His father couldn't see his smile.

"Resting-place." That was the meaning of the name Hania. "And will she find that?"

Having located it Paul stabbed the cake with his fork.

"That means her mother is from this place. Does she live with you?"

That Leto should have married her was unlikely.

"She does. She is my concubine. Her name is Alice." He sipped his coffee. "You haven't asked about Ghanima yet."
