Luke's, Saturday

Eliot hadn't slept well since Wednesday -- not that he'd been sleeping that well this last month or so in the first place -- so once he'd finished up some paperwork in the office at Luke's, he kicked the cook off the grill and started pan-frying up some potatoes.

And if he happened to be sipping a breakfast beer while he was at it, well. At least he was only sipping it.

But she understood! "You did?" she asked, delighted. "Oh Alluka, that is the best present! I'm so happy to hear it."

Alluka was going to eat more this weekend, too. Hope she realized that. "You celebrated my birthday?"

Oh, she knew. That was part of Kathy being around.

"Ringo and I did," she said, pleased that Kathy was so happy. "We ate so many vegetables and wore bright colours--I wore one of the pairs of pants you gave me, the pastel ones!--and then we went AirTreking in Baltimore."

Kathy laughed at the image that was. "Vegetables and bright clothing is the best way to celebrate my birthday. Thank you so much for taking the day to remember me."

She needed to take a long drink of water so as not to cry. "I hope you wished Dante a happy birthday, too. We share one."

"I'm sure he didn't mind," Kathy assured her. Dante hadn't been overly thrilled with his birthday anyway. "If he didn't mention it, I'm sure he had a reason."

"I'll have to get him something anyway," Alluka said, nodding. "Did you know he likes strawberry-things, Kathy? I bet Papa Hannibal would make me something for him. Maybe I could even help out."

"He loves all kinds of sweets, but especially strawberry things," Kathy said with a nod. "I made him strawberry cupcakes once, but I think his favorite is strawberry sundaes."

Which would have the added benefit of not reminding him overmuch of Kathy!

"Well, he's very tough," Kathy said, pretending to be Very Serious but with eyes that sparkled with mischief. "Little things like ice cream in the cold don't bother him."

Alluka tilted her head at that.

"I guess so," she said slowly. "But he's never seemed that tough to me."

Mostly, he seemed kind of lonely. Alluka could relate.

"He is tough is a lot of ways," Kathy said slowly, thinking it over. "And he's certainly tough enough for winter ice cream...."

Dante was a touchy subject for Kathy right now and she didn't want to say anything definitive about his emotional state right now.

"...But I think he needs friends far more than he may think he does."

Alluka beamed. Compliments still made her so, so happy.

"Are you hungry, Kathy?" she asked. "Or thirsty? I can take care of you too."

She even had money! That she'd worked for and earned!

Like Eliot would allow Kathy to pay for any of the food she'd eaten today. But Kathy wasn't going to deny Alluka the chance to do something nice for her. As for amends went, it was pretty paltry, but Kathy was willing to do damn near anything.

And eating with Alluka was always fun in its own way. "I am," she said, nodding. "I'd love something good and healthy, like a salad or stir-fry..." And then she winked. "And something good and chocolatey for dessert, I think."
