Luke's, Sunday

Kanan had been contemplating blowing off work today. After all, if 'having your dead Master come to visit for a couple of days' wasn't a valid reason to not come in to work, he really didn't know what was. But Master Billaba had insisted, pointing out that in taking this job, he'd made a commitment to be here. And also because she wanted to see what he did with himself these days.

So, there was an extra person at Luke's today, sitting back and looking mostly amused while Kanan navigated the diner, and occasionally raising an eyebrow at the busboy as he speculated about what sort of relationship the two of them might have had.

If by the end of the day the busboy was starting to wonder who kept throwing wadded-up napkins at the back of his head when there was never anybody behind him who possibly could, well, nobody was going to admit to that, okay?

My apartment is HOT and I have my window open to let alllll the winter air in.

"The food here is certainly interesting," Depa noted to Kanan. "Don't they have real caf, though?"

"I ask myself that question every day," Kanan sighed, shaking his head. "You wouldn't believe the lengths I've gone to in order to even try to get my hands on some. Including but not limited to doing business with a karking pirate."

That had been a mistake.

He only still drank it out of sheer stubbornness. It might be the thing to actually finish the job that the Clones had tried to start.

"I thought you liked pirates," Depa said mildly. "You named yourself for one."

"I like them less when they're actively cheating me out of my credits," Kanan noted, dryly. "Kasmir was different."

Gave him a roof over his head and some food. Took him in even after Kanan had made off with the Kasmiri. Taught him how to survive.

"It was a name that fit what I needed people to think I was. So far, it's worked."

Tip and the Chief came in for lunch, and Tip waved happily. "Hi, Mr. Kanan. This is my friend Chief Shouting Bear."

"WHAT'S GOOD HERE?" the Chief shouted.

"No, Chief, we like him."

"It's served you well," Depa said. "I'm glad you had somebody there for you when I couldn't be."

"Well, the name is apt," Kanan said, blinking and giving Tip and the Chief a smile and a nod in greeting. "I can't fault him for living up to it."

Or maybe he'd earned it. Kanan wasn't going to throw stones either way.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Chief. The cook does a good haddock linguine if fish and pasta is to your taste. Or there are a few soups to choose from. And I'm kind of partial to most of what they do with the chicken."

Because it wasn't so close to nerf as to be almost insulting, the way steak was.

"For as long as that worked out," Kanan said, smiling a little sadly. "Though here's been... different. So far. Partly because I'm stuck here, admittedly."

Partly because there were more Jedi here than he'd seen in eight years combined, too.

"Haddock linguine, eh?" the Chief said in a much more natural tone of voice. "I haven't had a good pasta in . . . how long have I been dead, Stupidlegs?"

"Three years."

"Plus the Boov invasion . . . well, it's been a long time." The Chief climbed stiffly onto one of the stools at the counter, and Tip scrambled up next to him. "Let's try that."

"I'd like a burger, please," Tip requested.

"It seems like a quiet place, for the most part," Depa said. "I think you could use some time to step back from your life. To meditate and think upon things."

Kanan gave a little grin at the nickname, but didn't ask about it, reaching for a notepad to write down the order.

"One linguine and a burger," he repeated. "And would you like anything on the side with that burger, Gratuity? Fries, salad, soup?"

... Look at him, doing his job and doing it well. Not that he didn't before, but with Master Billaba sitting within earshot, it was possible that he was overcompensating a little for his usual casual demeanor, today.

It transpired that every. single. time Obi-Wan left the island to check on Luke, something worrisome was waiting for him when he returned.

When he arrived at the diner, chasing a familiar but long-gone presence in the Force, he was white as a sheet.

"Depa?"

"Just preferably not in the rain?"

Look, he was going to rag on himself for it before she could poke fun first. That was how this was going to be. At least he was smiling a little as he said it.

"Don't tell anybody... but this place has been good for me in ways I don't really admit. I'm still not at peace the way I was before, but I'm closer than I have been in a while."

And that was such a strange thought.

"I'm glad to hear it." Depa smiled at him. "I only ever wanted the best for you, Kanan. I'm proud of how well you've survived, but I wish you could actually live more."

"Who has soup or salad with a burger?" Tip asked.

"People who don't like potatoes, maybe," the Chief said.

"Those people should definitely be shouted at."

"Only if they judge other people for liking potatoes."

Ah, the wisdom of the ages.

"Obi-Wan." Depa gave him a bow and a smile. "I hadn't realized you were here as well." She looked him over, then her smile became more genuinely happy. "You survived."

"Surviving first, living later," Kanan sighed, though he was going to work on keeping that smile for as long as his face would let him, damn it. "Though I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't mind finding somewhere safe and just... settling down for a while. This place isn't even really that."

What with the odd visit from Vader, and all.

"Potatoes and salt are basically the only constants between where I'm from and here," Kanan offered, smiling wryly. "Sometimes I eat them just because they're familiar."

And then he'd regret eating so many salted potatoes, and he'd be good for a while.

"But I suppose they aren't for everyone. Fries with your burger, then. And anything to drink for either of you?"

"Water's fine," the Chief started to say, but Tip interrupted him with a demand for milkshakes.

"It's not like you're going to have to worry about the calories," she pointed out. "Or the sugar or anything."

The Chief nodded thoughtfully. "Alright then. Milkshakes. And waters, please." He eyed Tip. "Because at some point, you are going to have to start worrying about those things."

"So I did, if barely," Obi-Wan said, and tamped down on his immediate response of you did not. "Your presence here...?" A pause. "I believe I know what this is."

"It comes close enough," Depa answered. "Try what you can."

Yes, Master Yoda, she knew all about that word.

Okay, Kanan couldn't help but chuckle at that.

"I'll make sure she gets water with her meals from now on," he promised, writing down the rest of the order and sending it to the back. "At least if she's coming to Luke's on Sundays. Whether she actually drinks it or not is up to her, though."

He set to work getting water for them both, grinning faintly as he set a cup down in front of either of them.
