Alluka wasn't very sad when she wandered into work--late, but she'd been up late and then woken up late and the whole day had just followed that way--but she did have the stuffed elephant that Kathy had given her instead of one of her usual companions, which meant she was at least a little sad.

But they weren't going to dwell on that.

Instead, she and her elephant were looking for a new dress for her to wear. Something different. Something new.

(Maybe Kathy would like it, next time she visited.)

Ringo was sort of doing the rounds. That's what she told herself. You know, checking up on friends to see if they were doing okay after the weekend.

And if it turned out that she was in need of a little bit of companionship herself? That was a bonus.

She didn't want to think of herself as being selfish on a day like this.

"Hey, Alluka?" she called, voice softer than usual as she stepped into Demon Marcus.

"Hi, Ringo!" Alluka said, doing a twirl as she held a dress up to herself for her elephant to judge.

"No good, huh?"

Her elephant didn't like it.

"No good?" Ringo asked, distracted enough by her own thoughts that she didn't check to see if Alluka was talking to someone else.

"The dress." Alluka said, holding it up. It was cute, but generically so. "My elephant doesn't like it. We're having a hard time today figuring out clothes."

"Oh. It's cute?" Ringo didn't sound very enthusiastic with that observation.

She walked over and hopped up onto the counter to sit down and face Alluka. "Today's kinda hard for a lot of people, I think."

"No, it's not," Alluka said, sighing. She meant the dress, but it worked for the other part too. She hung the dress back up on one of the racks and glanced at Ringo.

Ringo tried a little smile. "How you holding up?" she asked.

"I don't know," Alluka said. "I'm not sad, but I'm not as happy either, even though I know Kathy will come visit again eventually."

"You mean if another weekend like this past one happens?"

"I know she's dead," Alluka said, a bit rebelliously. "But there was Kathy in the weird week when the island was full of monsters. And then there was Kathy, our Kathy this weekend. So Kathy will be back again, I know she will."

Ringo nodded. "You're probably right," she allowed. "Though it's probably more likely that it'll be some other Kathy, like when those monsters were on the island."

And that wasn't really what Ringo wanted.

"I love all Kathys," Alluka said mutinously.

She went to the counter and hugged her elephant.

"I suppose I do, too, in a way?" Ringo didn't sound totally sure about that.

"But it's not the same." She was kind of glad to see any Kathy, but she wanted hers.

Well, that much she could agree with...

"No, it's not the same," Alluka said, "but I'm still going to be happy for any Kathy that I meet because even if they're not my Kathy, they're a Kathy and that's more than we're supposed to get when someone's dead."

Ringo smiled. "That's very generous of you," she decided. "I think maybe I'm too greedy because if there's going to be a Kathy, I want it to be ours."

Alluka looked at Ringo over the top of her elephant.

"Are you sad, Ringo?"

The already-small smile on Ringo's face wavered slightly. "Yeah," she said softly. "I am."

She looked over at Alluka, wondering why the other girl had said she wasn't. What was different about them?

She was a little, since people were always leaving her behind.

But on the other hand, Alluka was used to being left behind. And Kathy had come back, just like Killua always did.

"Why?"

"Because I miss Kathy," Ringo answered softly. "I mean, I always miss her, but seeing her again reminds me of how much. Sort of like when you bump a bruise against the wall, and it hurts more than just bumping your arm against the wall."

Seeing Kathy again always left a little bruise.

"I don't get it," Alluka said, though from her pensive expression it was clear that she was trying. "Isn't it better to just be happy to see her?"

"Without it reminding me how much I miss her, you mean?" Ringo asked.

She shook her head. "It may only be me, but I can't have one without the other."

"But you can't change that," Alluka said, after a pause. "Usually, right? So... isn't it better to just be happy?"
