Sparkle... had kind of noped out of yesterday. He'd been doing pretty decently overall these days, sure, but between the awesomeness of last weekend being immediately followed by sending Elias back home, and that whole... thing... with his sister a few weeks back, he just hadn't been emotionally prepared to watch any of the students take one more big step towards moving on.

He didn't deal with that sort of stuff well, okay?

So today he was just kind of bumming around the clothing store. There was a shipment of cute raincoats and rubber boots in, and he'd just kind of let them sit in boxes, waiting for some kind of urge to get-up-and-go to strike him.

It wasn't happening.

He was painting his nails. Purple. With yellow polka dots.

Whee.

One more day until Dante was taking off from the island for a while. At least two weeks. And now that he knew the source of some grade-A ridiculous Kathy material, he had to go and see if Sparkle would part with it.

So he wandered in the store around noon, smirking a little. "Yo, what's up?"

Hi, Sparkle. Don't mind about the hair.

"Well," Sparkle said, putting the last finishing touches on his thumbnail, because there wasn't much in the world that could keep him from finishing a nail job once he'd started, "I haven't had to scrape my brain off the floor to say anything intelligent in over a week now, does that count?"

Seriously, for his first class ever, maybe he could have picked something a little less exhausting.

"How about-" he glanced up, took note of the hair, and after a moment to mentally adjust, mostly just decided that it was a good look on him. He'd seen far more extreme hair-colour changes, really. "Like, you?"

"Heading out on a roadtrip tomorrow, I'm good," Dante said lightly; he looked a little surprised by Sparkle's answer. "You okay. man?"

"... I mean, mostly?"

Shiiiittttttt.

"I had some stuff a while back, I guess I'm kinda still dealing with it? But, like, the semester is over, so I don't have to fake it on Wednesdays anymore, you know?"

Sparkle reached a hand up, barely catching himself before he could ruin his nails in his hair.

"Whatever, it's stupid family shit. You're going on a road trip?"

"Anders and me figured out neither of us have seen much of the States in our lives," Dante said.

He shrugged. He was curious as to what happened, but he figured they'd get there in time. "So we're renting a car and just going until we hit the Pacific."

"And now I'm sorry I didn't think of that," Sparkle admitted, pursuing his lips a little. "Something to put on the bucket list, there. Any places in particular you guys want to see?"

"New Orleans, the Grand Canyon, San Francisco..."

Dante trailed off. Remembering why he'd come here in the first place, he found himself smirking a little. "Disneyworld..."

"Oooh my god, please tell me you're going to pick a fight with Mickey Mouse," Sparkle laughed. "Shit, that's awesome. You've got a great itinerary going there."

"Totally putting that on the schedule," Dante said, laughing. "Kathy asked for Minnie Mouse ears."

Sparkle hesitated a little at that. Kind of blinked, smiled wryly, and tilted his head at that.

"Shit," he said. "She was, like, wearing a pair of those when I met her, you know? It's why I call her Mouse."

And now his guts were doing weird flips.

"She told me that," Dante admitted. He leaned against the counter. "Said you had prime blackmail material."

Huh.

"You mean, like, any outfit she ever tried to put herself in before I staged an intervention?"

Sparkle almost laughed at that.

"Shit, you should see some of the curtains she tried to dress herself in."

Dante grinned at him (still wondering vaguely what that weird hesitation had been earlier). "That's what I'm told," he said merrily. "You wanna dish?"

Surely Dante would understand 'abandonment issues' if the topic ever came up?

"Maaaaaaybe," Sparkle drawled, smirking. "But I charge for my blackmail materials. All the pictures I have of Kathy in the fashion that nature forgot, for... I dunno, a Goofy hat or something."

... Probably better than he'd like.

Dante snickered softly. "Fine, fine," he said, "Got any other souvenir requests from the road?"

"I mean, if you find any stupid tourist trap shit along the way, you know I'm gonna need you to try to steal part of, like, the world's biggest ball of twine or some dumb shit," Sparkle said, grinning. "All my dumbass crew ever tried to steal were, like, zoo animals. Mostly to see if we could. But you probably don't wanna stuff a camel into the car, either."

"Wait, you tried to steal a camel?" Dante asked.

He blinked at Sparkle. "... What kinda people were you running with?"

Bless his heart, he couldn't see Sparkle coming up with that on his own.

"Space idiots," Sparkle replied brightly. "I mean, shit, I still live with one of those."

Really, one couldn't possibly have too many space idiots in one's life.

"We got detention for the camel thing. You're so lucky Alenko isn't teaching here anymore, man. The teachers in this place used to be real hardasses."

"Does this place even know how to hire hardasses?" Dante said, snorting softly. "Never thought about stealing animals before. Seems like way too much trouble when you can just swing by the cat café and bring somebody home."

"... And now I'm wondering why the fuck the island doesn't have a cat cafe yet. Somebody would make BANK running one of those."

And Sparkle liked cats.

"'Cause there's one in Washington DC already?" Dante said. "...Though I should pitch that one to Anders. Bet he'd be all over it."

Why'd he come here again?

Oh, right. Pictures.

"And I'd be a regular," Sparkle decided. "Me and anybody who can't get to DC."

He gave his hand a shake, making sure his nails were dry, and then went fishing in his pocket for his phone.

"So, pictures of Mouse, right? God, I'm gonna have to go way back on my camera roll for that stuff."

"It'll be like a trip down memory lane," Dante said easily. "Man, I've heard way too many stories from back then in general, but nobody ever shows me the pictures."

"Clearly people need to keep blackmail material in mind more often," Sparkle mused, thumbing his way back through... several years of pictures. "All the better for loving mockery ages down the road, right?"

"Especially if it's as bad as people keep telling me," Dante said, smirking. "Thanks, man. I'm gonna owe you lunch sometime for this."
