Furnado Animal Shelter, Tuesday

Bunnies. Everything was bunnies. And chickens, yes, but mostly bunnies. Apparently this year was worse for bunny returns than usual, what with the bunny-related trauma of a few weeks ago, and so Furnado was kind of drowning in them.

Bunnies and chickens. Zack was occupying his time at work today by setting up pens big enough for all of the newcomers to have space to move around, bunnies on one side of the room, chickens on the other. And they were all adorable, and he was tempted to bring them all home, but so help him, he probably couldn't justify coming home with fifteen rabbits. Even if they were cute.

He had a sign up in the window today: BUNNIES.

And then another sign underneath, that one of the onsite vets had drafted up: A Pet Is A Commitment, Not A Toy.

... Which Zack couldn't argue with, and so in the window it would stay.

So, if Kira was going to stick around for the summer (which was really the only option, other than going home and having her parents stress her out about college for three months) then she needed to find a job. All the restaurants were out, because she knew she'd end up eating far more than necessary, so she'd been looking at the stores, and the animal shelter was high on her list. She'd made her way out here with the intention of acting like an adult, but that all kind of flew out the window as soon as she walked inside.

"Bunnies! Oh, hi bunnies," she said. She reached down to pet one of them and slipped right into baby talking at it about how soft and adorable it was. But really, bunnies!

"Someone is a fan of bunnies, huh?" Zack glanced up from where he was doing battle with chicken wire across the room. "You wouldn't want to adopt about six of them, would you?"

He was only mostly joking.

"I could adopt one... or maybe two. Bunnies should always have a friend, right?" Kira actually managed to tear her eyes away from the cuteness for a moment, and saw Zack's fight. "Oh, do you need a hand with that?"

"They should," Zack agreed, "just, you have to be careful with friend bunnies, unless you want lots of bunnies."

He glanced at the chicken wire, and then turned a wry smile toward Kira.

"And actually, yeah, if you wouldn't mind holding that end of the wire to the pole while I fasten all of this to the frame, that would be great. I've never built an enclosure like this before."

Which wasn't to say it was garbage or anything. He just could have maybe done it in a different order.

"Sure thing," she said. She went over and held onto the wire, looking around the shop. "I have to admit, bunnies and chickens are a surprise. I didn't expect to see, you know, normal animals here. Nothing about this place is usually allowed to be normal."

"I figure the fact that they're normal animals is kind of being made up for by the fact that there are more of them than usual this year because of people being traumatized by giant rabbits a few weeks back," Zack offered as he started fastening the wire. "... Which is kind of sad."

It really was. The little bunnies were perfectly harmless.

"Aww, but those were scary bunnies and these are little fluffy bunnies that just want to eat carrots and flop on you." Kira laughed and held the wire tightly so it would be nice and secure. "At least you won't have to worry about keeping the boy and girl chickens apart. Not as much as the bunnies, I mean."

"That's true," Zack laughed. "And the chickens are way too young to even start laying eggs, yet. Way easier to keep tabs on."

Unless they got really creative with where they started nesting, once they were older. But hopefully they'd be adopted out by then.

"It's good to see someone in here who hasn't been traumatized too much by the big bunnies to see the good in the little floppy ones. Sometimes people around here can be kind of weird about how they react to the scary stuff."

Kira shrugged at that and smiled. "I try not to let the things that get weird here mess with me too much, otherwise I'd be afraid of everything. Plus, it's hard to be mad at cute animals," she said. "I'm Kira, by the way. You seem like someone in charge here, yeah?"

"In charge or something like it," Zack agreed, laughing a little. "I'm Zack. I kind of wound up owning the place a few months back."

He finished pinning off the last of the chicken wire, and then stood up and dusted off his hands before holding one out to her for a handshake.

"It's good to meet you, Kira."

Kira grinned as she shook his hand. "Oh good, you're just who I wanted to talk to! I don't suppose you need any help with things? I just graduated, and I need a summer job. I was kind of thinking being around animals would be a good way to spend the summer."

"Oh! Yeah!" Zack's expression lit up at that, and he nodded. "We can still use people out here working the front, introducing people to the animals, helping them sort out what supplies they need, anything like that. Is there any particular day that works for you? Wednesdays are taken, but... that's kind of it."

Zack was a simple soul who had clearly never had to worry about things like 'job interviews' in his life. Anyway, Kira here liked bunnies. That was basically one of the major requirements for working here, right?

Someday, Kira was going to have to do a real job interview, and that was going to suck. This was so much more effective!

"I can come in on Thursdays!" she said. "Is that all you need?"

"That's it," Zack agreed, nodding and giving Kira a grin. "Welcome aboard. I'm told it gets easier to resist the urge to bring home everything cute and sad the longer you work here, but that hasn't started happening for me, yet."
