The Park, Monday Afternoon

Anne had been telling herself almost since the day she'd arrived at Fandom that she needed to get out more. She hadn't even found a permanent place to live, and while hotels had their upsides, she really should try to make some progress on that.

But despite the friendly front she tried to put up whenever she was talking to anyone, Anne had arrived on the island profoundly tired. She'd managed to get out a couple of times, but mostly she'd slept whenever she wasn't prepping for class. Her body had been through, well, a lot over the preceding couple of months, and she'd clearly needed the rest.

Now, though, the weather was beginning to turn toward proper summer, and the warmth and sunlight were serving to help lift her mood somewhat. So Anne had decided that she could probably find a better way to spend the afternoon than brooding over the pair of matched swords that she hadn't taken out of her luggage again.

She eventually found herself in the park, standing out in a nice grassy spot where the sun could find her when it peaked through the clouds. Her jacket had been removed, and carefully laid to one side, and then Anne had decided, what the heck, and sat down to awkwardly get her boots off so she could go barefoot for a bit. It occurred to her that now that she only had the one arm, she might consider something a bit easier to get on and off than boots, and maybe she'd do something about that later.

For a minute or two, she just stood there, bare toes wiggling in the grass, eyes closed, simply enjoying the weather and the quiet. Then, very slowly, she began moving through a simple series of tai chi forms. The forms were like old friends, deeply familiar, but the last time she'd gone through them she had had two arms.

It wasn't like a missing arm affected her balance to the point where it should have made the exercise hard, but every time a movement felt off enough to remind her of the change, Anne's anger and pain would flare up again, forcing her to stop, close her eyes, and take deep breaths as she sought to calm the emotions within her.

She found that she was spending a lot more time standing there fighting with herself than actually moving, but maybe that was okay.
