Éponine had the haggard expression of someone who had slept poorly, which could be attributed to her cat carousing about in the middle of the night, knocking things onto the floor with gleeful abandon. The cup of coffee in her hand when she arrived to open up would back up this theory, as would the entire pot of it she promptly started brewing as soon as she was inside. (She wasn't complaining that much. As far as reasons for not sleeping well went, she'd had much worse.)

When a swarm of butterflies burst out of one of the mailboxes, she just sighed, shut the mailbox door, and admonished them, "See that you don't fly into customers' faces, or I will chase you out, just see if I won't."

It was hardly the first time that had happened.
