The Boards, Sunday Afternoon

Jono was actually in a fairly good mood today as he opened the Boards for the weekly band rehearsal. Even if, truth be told, he couldn't actually tell the entirety of who actually was in the bloody group these days.

So basically, at this point, if you showed up and wanted to play an instrument or sing, it was fair game. Maybe it was more fun that way anyhow.

"Is there any beer?" Dante called on his way in, guitar slung over his shoulder.

//What kind of establishment do you think I'd be running if there wasn't?//

Probably a theatre, really.

//Of course there is,// Jono said, gesturing over to a case of beer on a table on the way in. //Help yourself, mate.//

"Thanks, man," Dante said, throwing him a jaunty salute on his way over to the beer. "What's up?"

He plucked a beer out of the case.

//Nothing new,// Jono replied with a shrug. //Been keeping it easy, for th'most part. Probably should start thinking about actually doing something with myself soon, but for th'time being...//

Eh. 'Doing something' seemed like a lot of effort. He'd rather just throw himself into a dangerous situation wearing a tight uniform with or without an X on it and call it good.

//How 'bout you?//

"Hit Baltimore yesterday, had a good time," Dante said, shrugging. He popped open his bottle. (Saying "You were right, I guess" was just not in his system.)

That was fine. Jono would probably find out sooner or later. Radio did that.

//Huh,// Jono mused. //Hannibal and I headed out that way too. I'd never been before, oddly enough. Have a good time?//

"Yeah, it was pretty cool," Dante said easily, taking a swig from his beer. "Got the gang together and a shitton of glitter. We fit right in."

//If there's one thing I learned yesterday,// Jono mused, //it's that Fandomites were basically made for Pride events. Glitter, rainbows, shirtlessness...//

It had been kind of fantastic, really.

//Bloody wonder we don't have something like that here, all things considered.//

Maybe because it would be hard to navigate the stairs with a float.

"Hey, if you wanna organize Fandom Pride, I'm not gonna stop you," Dante said. "Still a couple of weeks left in the month, right?"

//True enough,// Jono agreed, //though I suppose some Pride celebrations bleed into other months as well. Th'one in London goes on for a couple of weeks, mostly in July.//

So there was plenty of time.

//S'funny,// he added. //Only thing I ever had to be proud and outspoken about before was being a mutant. Didn't give much thought to this other bit.//

Mostly because people tended to zero in on the first thing and pass judgment before 'also bi' ever came into the equation.

"Yeah, well, having people gunning for you does that," Dante said, shrugging. "Hard to sweat the small stuff."

//Hard to sweat the small stuff,// Jono echoed with a nod. //Though the sort of 'gunning for you' comes from more or less the same place, I suppose.//

Woo, bigotry.

//Still, it's good to see so many people rallying together to be so defiantly themselves.//

"And a whole lot of fun," Dante said easily. "That place is kinda where I live anyway."

//Defiantly yourself?// Jono tilted his head a little. //I suppose I've been there once or twice myself over th'years. Mostly I just get bloody annoyed at being shot at and mutant harder about it.//

Which was a big step from his teenage days, when he'd just get better at wrapping his face.

Dante snorted. "That's pretty much the ticket," he said. "Maybe flip people the bird a little more, but otherwise..."

//Oh, I can definitely incorporate more rude gestures into my daily routine,// Jono said easily. Almost cheerfully, even. //Happens to be a favourite pastime of mine, if I'm being honest about it.//

Some people just needed to get the finger.

"Then move on to doin' rude gestures while covered in sparkly rainbows and we've got one hell of a pride statement," Dante said, snickering.

Damn, now he was thinking about that.

//And at the end of th'day, that's what the island really needs,// Jono decided. //A bunch of people willing to stroll down the street in rainbows, flipping off anybody they pass by who doesn't like it.//

Actually... that sounded like fun.

"Maybe get the band playing," Dante said, grinning. "Peebee's up for going full White Stripes if we have to."

//... I knew she had good taste when I met her,// Jono mused. //You know, now I, ah, I kind of want this.//

Which was a pretty out-there thing for him to say, really. But it actually made sense to do, around here. Everyone had something they'd been beaten down over, it seemed. At least a few of them had sexuality muddying up the rest of it.

"Aw no, how terrible," Dante said, grinning in a particularly shit-eating kind of way.

Jono... facepalmed. What was there to do but facepalm?

//So, I guess that'll be a thing to do, hm? Can't complain I've got nothing to keep myself busy with when the island has been woefully Pride-deficient since... forever.//

There had been a club at the school for all of one semester once, he thought. But that was about it.

"Which is kinda weird," Dante mused. "Going by my friends here, anyway."

//And mine,// Jono agreed, tilting his head a bit. //I suppose when surrounded by plenty of people coming from more or less the same place, there's not as much to prove. But the solidarity would be nice, anyway. It always takes so bloody ridiculously long before people around here realize just how many people like them there are.//
