Okay, so Sparkle hadn't been in to work for... a while. At least, not as himself, anyway. Last weekend there'd been that whole 'being a flying pony' thing, which normally he'd be kind of amused about, only this time around the pony wasn't even himself.

Anyway, usually when the island turned him into a pony, he was a unicorn, not a pegasus. Either way, it meant that he was a touch behind on things like orders that needed to be placed, and with summer in full swing, he had to put in orders for, like, new swimwear and t-shirts. Some of the racks were looking a little sparse.

So, if anybody needed Sparkle, he was going to actually be at the counter today, looking like a store manager who was doing his job, for once.

For no particular reason other than that he had time and wanted to hear Sparkle's voice ~~and because I'm having a boring evening~~, Leto called. He suspected that Sparkle would be at work -- yes, he did try to keep track of Fandom time, and he was fairly sure he was right -- and hoped that the island hadn't decided to balance the Pride weekend out by throwing something horrible at the inhabitants. In which case, Leto supposed, he could find that Sparkle was in a bathtub instead.

No bathtub this week, fortunately! Just a very bored Sparkle, sounding thankful to hear Leto's ringtone.

"My hero," he said, quite pleased as he answered the phone. "You called right in the middle of the most boring part of my workday."

Ordering the bulk packages of men's socks. Yawn.

"Hello, Sparkle." It might be possible to guess that Leto was smiling from the tone of his voice. "And will you tell me about that most boring part? Or has anything more exciting happened recently?"

"You soooooo don't want to hear about a large order of grey socks," Sparkle decided. "I was a flying pony last weekend, though. That was... I don't know if I'd call it exciting. She certainly seemed to think basically everything was, though."

"A flying pony? I suppose it could be worse. Was there one of those weekends, or were you chosen particularly for this?"

Leto wasn't even going to pretend to be interested in the socks.

"Definitely one of those weekends," Sparkle replied. "But, like, not the pony weekend? I think it was the 'other people' weekend, but my 'other people' just happened to be a pony with wings."

He paused, and then added, "A pink one. Named Sparkleface."

Leto just had to laugh at that.

"Sparkleface. Should I mention this to Hania?"

"I bet she'd love it," Sparkle laughed, shaking his head. "I'm sorry I didn't get any pictures. I didn't think of it and I didn't have fingers. She'll just have to trust that I was adorable. And that I can't turn into a pony on command."

"She'll be very disappointed, both by the lack of photos and that you can't repeat it to show her," Leto replied, then paused. "You didn't eat the plants, did you?"

This was mostly teasing, as he figured Sparkle would be a lot more upset about this if he had.

"Naaah," Sparkle replied, chuckling. "Apparently as a pegasus, I lived on a strict diet of lollipops and cotton candy."

Not a bad life. Possibly a short one. But not a bad one.

"Oh, Hania is going to sulk," Leto said, laughing again. "I'm pleased to hear that you had a good weekend."

"I mean, I had a not bad weekend," Sparkle replied. "I still would have rather been me. But it wasn't anything too traumatizing, for the island. You know?"

"I know, Sparkle. I always thought that was one of the worst things about the island, that at any moment we could turn into someone else. Whatever troubles we face, at least they are our own."

Just as suddenly as he had turned serious, he added: "But at least you could make my daughter envy you this time."

"True," Sparkle agreed with a little laugh. "Just wait until she finds out about the friendship song."

"I'm not sure I want to know," Leto replied, chuckling. "Or that Hania ought to."

"It's loud, obnoxious, and mostly made up right there on the spot," Sparkle shared. "Hania definitely should never know."

Then again, it could be fun.

No, Sparkle, it wouldn't be fun at all.

"Oh, no, she shouldn't. If you teach it to her I'll have it banned." It might be hard to tell if he was being serious or not.

"And what would be the punishment for breaking a ban like that, anyway?"

Because Sparkle would probably sing it just to be contrary.

"To be banned from entering the city for a year. Which could be a disadvantage. And obviously I can't make exceptions."

Would it really be worth not being able to visit, Sparkle?

There was a long pause, and then Sparkle ventured, "Okay, but there's a multiverse out there, and some places go way faster and some places go way slower. I could totally argue that we've been talking for a year already today, by someone's standards."

He might not even be right. But he could argue it.

"Yes, but laws are specific to places, and the time stated is the length of time in that particular place. If not, I could suddenly argue that any law from anywhere in the multiverse applied on Arrakis."

Sorry, Sparkle, Leto wasn't going to buy that.

"Of course, I could make it legal to sing it on certain other planets, but I don't think you want to visit those."

"I could sing it right here," Sparkle countered. "Fandom isn't part of your jursidiction, after all."

And he didn't even have to travel, for that one!

"True, but then I couldn't bring Hania here. As her father it is my duty to protect her."

Against songs sung by flying ponies.

"Protect her from friendship?"

And joy! Friendship and joy!

"From loud and obnoxious songs about friendship that she would continue adding to herself."

Leto sighed. "Are you sure you want me go endure that?"
