Anders was confused when he got to work and saw that the shop was full of plastic tubes. But he supposed he couldn't expect Zack to have left everything the same while he took most of the summer off.

And it turned out kittens were even more adorable when they had a habitrail to chase their toys through, so that was a plus.

Dante stood right outside the shop, grinning broadly at his companion. "You ready for this?" he said. "I'm gonna warn you, Ades, kittens are dangerous."

"What, you think they're gonna mistake me for a can of tuna?" she laughed, grinning back. "'M gonna get eaten alive by kittens?"

"Spoken like somebody who's never had a cat before," Dante said, grinning as he walked into the shop.

"I had lots of cats!" Ada protested as she followed him in. "Th' cats that live at th'ranch, an' th' ones that travel with us, th' lions...just...ain't none of 'em were mine. They're everyone's cats, or their own cats, mostly."

Anders unfolded from a tube entrance with a broad smile when he recognized the new customers' voices.

"I'm almost sure all cats are their own cats," he offered. "Some of them just let people pretend to manage them."

[OOC: Wanted to grab this, but Anders is moddable & I am 500% down with messy pinging so nobody's stuck waiting for me.]

"Ain't no one manages a lion, 'less it wants t' be managed," Ada agreed cheerfully. "Hey, Anders. Think you can help me find a cat that'd be willing t' hang out with me?"

"We needed an expert," Dante said, waggling his eyebrows at Anders expressively as he swaggered on in. "Ada here feels like coming home and shocking her uncle by bringing some pussy with her."

"Also, I want some company, an' th' ability to spam people with cat pictures," Ada said dryly. "--but th' ability t' make dirty jokes ain't a drawback."

"I'm never going to discourage a girl who's interested in pussies," Anders said, with a cheerful waggle of his own eyebrows. "You're in the right place. Do you think you want a kitten, or an older cat?"

"You're both th' worst," Ada snickered. "I dunno, kittens get adopted faster, yeah? So maybe an older one."

Yes, Ada was a softy. Now hush.

Dante grinned, eyeing the... whatever the set-up in the room was. "Maybe a gnarly, snarly old guy who just wants everyone to leave him alone."

"We might have one or two of those," Anders said, gesturing them toward a pink plastic tube that traveled the length of the store. "Follow me. Watch your heads."

He crawled into the tube, headed briskly towards the cat room.

"There's easier ways t' get me on m' knees, y'know," Ada joked, but got down and followed him. "I do want a cat that actually likes me, y'know, not just 'doesn't hate' me. 'Specially since we gotta do a lot of long hours driving t'gether."

"...I don't gotta get a special little cat seatbelt or anything, do I?"

Dante followed on behind them, still mildly bemused by the whole set-up. But he wasn't going to complain about butts.

"I think you need one of those portable cat carrier things for that?"

"And some blankets so the cat's comfortable on the trip," Anders added. "You're driving? I don't think I knew you had a car."

He emerged into the cat room, which thankfully had been spared tube-based redecoration, and gestured to a wall of cages. "Take a look, see if any strike your fancy."

"'M trailer hooks on to a truck when th' carnival is touring. Ain't my truck, but I'll probably take turns driving it at points so the road crew can take a break. Usually 'm busy sleeping off the last town while we're on th' road, at least at first," she explained. "Though if kitty wants to ride in th' cab of th' truck for th' view, I ain't gonna argue."

But then there were so many cats. "Oh my gosh."

No, Ada, you cannot have all the floofs.

Dante grinned as he made it into the room. He picked a wall to lean against. "Now we wanted to come here because we need your cat advice," he informed Anders.

Ada was listening to whatever Anders said, really, but she had to go over and make happy little sounds at the majestic ball of floof, to see if it was really as soft as it looked.

"I figure I got space for two, even, if'n you think they'd be happier in a pair," she said over her shoulder. "I ain't gonna separate anyone from their best buddy."

Anders went over to unlock Billie's cage, lifting out the floof.

"She's one of my favorites," he said as he offered the lightly protesting cat to Ada. "Looks like a Maine Coon, but she's about half the size. Her best friend is this guy, but mostly she just likes bossing him around."

"She's a cat," Dante said. "It's kinda what they do."

"Don't you listen to th' boys," she told the cat, taking her in her arms carefully. "They actually like bossy girls a lot."

WHAT? YOU DO.

"Oh! She's so soft!"

"Isn't she?" Anders said approvingly. "I love the ones who look and feel like pillows but have fierce little predator hearts."

"That remains to be seen," Dante said brightly, reaching for the cat. "You fierce, cat?"

Ada had been gently scratching her between the ears, and giggled when her hand got insistently headbutted for more.

"You got toys?" she asked Anders as she let Dante take the cat. "Bet we could get her to pounce on him."

"Over here," Anders said, once he realized what kind of toys Ada meant. (Sue him, sometimes he had a dirty mind.) He found a box in a cabinet and opened it for Ada and Dante to see. "Try one of the fishing things with feathers. She goes crazy for them."

"Cats get ticklish too, who knew?" Dante said. "Especially if something's dancing in the air inches from them and it keeps booping them."
