The Perk, Friday Morning

She had found a tea house. It wasn't called that here, and the tea wasn't very good, but it was still close enough. Ancillaries would not enter tea houses for any other reason than to be of assistance to an officer, and tea were never wasted on them, but Breq was learning to pass as human. And drinking tea at a tea house, even bad tea, was important wasn't it? And since visiting one on your own wasn't unusual here -- that was her impression at least -- she saw no reason to ask for someone to join her today.

Cradling her cup in her hands, the gloves protecting from the heat from the tea, she looked out of the window.

Outside, someone she recognized walked by. That in itself was quite unexpected. Even more surprising, even improbable, was that it was someone she had expected to be a thousand years dead. Seivarden Vedaai had been one of her officers once, arriving on Justice of Toren just out of training. She had never been a favourite, although not one whom Breq -- Justice of Toren at the time -- had actively disliked. Just your typical well-bred Radchaai of good family, and she had later been given command of her own ship.

Nothing on Breq's face or in her body language gave away her surprise. She wasn't concerned that Seivarden would recognize her; her current body hadn't been in use during Seivarden's time. It bothered her though, a strange feeling she couldn't quite make sense of. She turned her gaze away from the window, thoughtfully looking down into her teacup.
