The Park, Friday Afternoon

Today was, if you asked Kanan, actually a pretty gorgeous one. Sure, there were a few clouds, but the weather was tolerable, there was even a nice little breeze. It wasn't pouring buckets of rain on his head or anything like that, though, if he was being entirely honest, he probably wouldn't have minded the rain so much. Anything to help get rid of the glitter that had exploded all over him when he went to investigate a strange box in his bathroom that morning while he was still damp from his morning shower.

Thanks for that, Fandom.

So he looked a little bit like he was ready for a Fandom dance today when he stepped outside and started glittering in the sunlight, but that wasn't going to stop him from heading to the park with his lightsaber to go through a few forms. Stance had accompanied him for the walk and was happily napping underneath one of the benches, and if he closed his eyes and just let the sun beat down on him, Kanan could fall into old patterns easily and ignore the fact that he looked like a walking light show, throwing off shades of blue whenever the light from his saber caught one of the rogue specks of glitter that he hadn't been able to wash away during his second, somewhat more cranky shower.

Ino liked the park. She'd always liked it, but after living in Midgar for years she valued it all the more.

She also appreciated the sparkly figure doing weapons practice.

"Glitter suits you," she called, when it looked like he was between patterns.

Kanan lowered his lightsaber and shut it off before looking over to see who it was who had called out to him. Ah, right. That one from the shark thing. He offered her a little grin.

"I try to avoid it whenever I can," he shared. "I don't want people to know how well I wear it, or they'll expect me to do so all the time."

[intraspective]

She grinned back at him.

"What a shame," she said cheerfully. "I just can't understand why you wouldn't want to wear it."

[uncertain_dume]

"Well, it's a little conspicuous, don't you think?"

Said the guy who was waving a glowing sword around in the park, keeping company with his rainbow-spotted dog as he did so.

[intraspective]

She raised an eyebrow as she looked him up and down slowly, then transferred her gaze to his dog.

"I think you already got that covered," she noted.

Yeah, Kanan had to laugh a little at that.

"Okay, I deserved that. For what it's worth, I don't often have the sword out, at least." He paused, and then smirked. "Can't do much about being easy on the eyes, though."

Kanan.

[intraspective]

"I don't remember saying that," Ino drawled, amused. "Though come to think of it, it ain't entirely wrong..."

Oh, Ino. Kanan's ego really didn't need the stroking.

It wasn't stopping him from grinning in reply all the same, of course.

"And that isn't even entirely the glitter," he shared, laughing. "I try not to be too conspicuous when I'm not around here, I mean. Stance stays home, the saber stays out of sight. I'm better at not being noticed than you'd think right now, I swear."

[intraspective]

Hey, she called it like she saw it! And it was true...

"Oh really? I'm not sure I believe that... in fact, that's almost the sort of statement that demands I get you to prove it."

She'd double dog dare him if she had to!

Okay, and at that, Kanan had to laugh.

"Well, my very first class around this place was about avoiding notice," he offered. "Besides that I'm not sure how you'd want me to prove it around here, when banality is the exception instead of the rule."

[intraspective]

"Oh, please, like teaching a class around here proves you know anything about it," she scoffed, still smiling so he'd know she was teasing. "And that, sir, sounds like a cop-out answer."

[uncertain_dume]

"And I wouldn't want to leave that one on a cop-out," Kanan replied, smirking a little. "Okay, so how do you propose I prove it? Lose the sword? Dress the part? Take you on a field trip to my galaxy so you know what it is I'm contending with in the first place?"

Go over Stance with a sharpie?

[intraspective]

That last one, definitely! Sharpie the dog!

"Hmmm, I wonder..." Ino crossed her arms thoughtfully as Silly toddled out of her hair to perch on her shoulder and chirp. "Yes, darling, I know."

A beat.

"Honestly, I'm terribly tempted to take you up on the field trip. I like field trips. And I'm pretty good at blending in myself."

Ino cheated outrageously, mind.

Tip was having one of those rare, "I should get outside and be healthy and active" afternoons. (Also, she was procrastinating working on her homework for creative writing. Traffic lights didn't inspire her, okay?) So she was going for a walk through the park. It'd started out as a run, then quickly devolved into a jog, and for a little bit of town it had even been a speed-walk, but now it was sort of lazy and leisurely, giving her lots of time to stop and watch the sparkly guy practicing with a glowing sword.

"See, that looks like a way more interesting form of exercise."

You'd think by this point that Kanan would be used to pretty much that exact comment, but he still froze for a moment before letting loose a soft laugh and shutting off his blade all the same.

"Which part? The lightsaber or the glitter?" He gave a wry smile and then added, "Hey, Gratuity."

"Hey Kanan," Tip greeted in return. "I'm definitely going with 'lightsaber'. Even though I didn't know that's what that was until right now. Contrary to the Student Council's general belief, I don't actually find glitter that exciting."

"I'm not generally a fan myself," Kanan confessed, "but I was the idiot who poked at the box this morning, so this is my punishment, I suppose."

Like a walking disco ball. Not that he knew what disco was. He'd probably enjoy it, too.

"Is that what that was. I saw one in the bathroom and decided I didn't want to know."

Thankfully. It would have taken weeks to get glitter out of all that hair.

She tilted her head at the lightsaber. "So where does one learn how to do fancy glowy sword work, anyway?"

"You made the wise decision," Kanan agreed, nodding knowingly. And glitteringly. Glitterly? Sparklingly. "And I'm afraid I can't help you much with that one. I picked this up in a different galaxy from a group of people who aren't really around anymore."

Dead. They were very dead.

"But from what I've seen around here, there are a lot of similarities with Earth's less glowy sword work styles, so you might not be completely out of luck."

[intotheout]

"Huh. You know, I never even thought about learning to use a sword. I have a gun -- from a different planet, even, though I'm not sure if it's from a different galaxy. But it's kind of deeply creepy and awful, so I generally prefer not to use it at all, if I can help it."

[uncertain_dume]

"Huh," Kanan said right back, looking thoughtful. "A lot of people around here seem to take exception to guns."

That was because guns were horrible, Kanan.

"They're pretty standard back home. What about yours is creepy and awful?"

"It erases things. No light. No sound. No warning. You just point it at something, pull the trigger, and --" Tip opened her hands dramatically, resisting the urge to say 'poof' or make some sort of noise. They didn't make any noise. "What you shot is just gone. Anything. Trees. Buildings." She bit her lip. "People."

Even a lightsaber probably couldn't deflect that. Plasma was still a form of matter, after all.

"... Yeah, mine can't do that," Kanan replied, wide-eyed. "I'm guessing you'd have to be pretty desperate to resort to pulling something like that out."

He bit his own lip for a moment, and then tilted his head a bit.

"Want to learn how to use a sword? I can't teach you any of the really fancy stuff, but some basic self-defense, at the very least. How to grab a stick and beat someone back with it..."

The really fancy stuff involved an affinity to the Force that couldn't be taught, but self-defense was self-defense, and form could be taught easily enough.

"Yes," Tip decided, much faster and more firmly than even she expected. Look, she'd felt the need to use a Boov gun on more than one occasion already, and between her own world and here there were plenty of situations where being able to at least clear a way with something long and heavy would be super advantageous.

Also, part of her did enjoy hitting and breaking things. She was a teenager, after all.

"I mean, that'd be really cool, thank you. If you have time. Um."

[uncertain_dume]

"I'm not doing anything right now that I can't do later," Kanan replied, smiling wryly. "I have one job, and I don't have to show up there until Sunday. Unless you're a really slow learner, I think we'll be fine."

He glanced around the park.

"And here's where I wish I had that old broomstick," he noted. "I can show you some basics today with any branch around here that feels comfortable in your hand, and we can get you a proper practice sword for later if you decide this is something you want to keep up on, how does that sound?"
