Pick Your Poison, Wednesday

--after all, I'm thirteen! I'm old enough to work in a bar!

Ino squinted at her PHS trying to figure out why Elena had decided to bombard her with her latest fight with Rosalind. (Well, really, she knew why. When she wasn't stuck here she was Rosa's partner and Ino had made an effort to get to know Elena.)

But still. She scrolled through the texts dubiously reading the play-by-play of Elena's point of view of their argument and knowing she was going to have to get Rosa's too.

Despite the hassle it was going to be to sort this out from a distance, Ino smiled as she leaned forward on her elbows and texted back: You totally are! And I bet you'll be good at it! Do you get to wear a cute uniform? How're you doing your hair?

Ino was a terrible influence.

It was somewhere around noon when Sparkle came in, carrying a bag from the Thai takeout place in one hand, and a tray of sugary sweet drinks from the Perk in the other, and shot Ino a grin.

"So, have you recovered from your birthday yet?"

There had been so much ~~handwavy~~ cake.

So much.

ALL THE CAKE.

"I'm still seein' rainbows," Ino said cheerfully. "But I'm down for more sugar if that's what you were askin'. Hang on a sec, dealin' with a kid."

You'd look like a prostitute if you wore that, honey, especially at the bar. 'Less that's the impression you want to give, maybe think that over.

Sparkle leaned up against the counter, depositing a healthy helping of Thai takeout and the drinks and waiting for her to finish up with a little grin on his face.

"Take your time," he said. "A kid, huh?"

"Bestie's little sister," Ino said, grinning at him. 'Bestie' wasn't the right word for it, but Ino didn't like having to define the word partner today. "Which means when they fight I get stuck in the middle."

She didn't mind so much.

Yes, I said that to you. Now, go, give me options here! Be the fashion queen your heart desires! Give me photos!

"Aw, she sounds cute," Sparkle decided. "Kids being kids and all. What's the fight about?"

"Part time job," Ino said lightly. "They're having a difference of opinion over what Elena can do. She's thirteen, you know?"

Sparkle tilted his head a little at that one.

"Maybe I know? I know thirteen year olds can do a lot more than people give them credit for, but most people can't even get a job until sixteen back home."

Ino hummed a little.

"In my original world, I were a legal adult at eleven," she said. "Because I was a ninja who'd passed all the tests and was on active duty. I ain't one to argue 'bout what kids can and can't do. Elena's got a job at a bar. At thirteen. But her sister got the job I do at thirteen, so..."

Sparkle remembered enough about Ino's job to know that Elena's sister really didn't have any room to throw stones at that one.

"I mean, if she can handle herself at the bar, then she should be fine," he settled on. "I would've killed to be able to hold down a job at that age."

It was pretty hard for a homeless kid to get back on his feet without complications like 'social workers' or 'the police' tripping him up when he wanted some means to get money.

Ino smiled at him.

"Yeah, it can be in some worlds," she said, "but you ain't just that kid any longer either."

That that kid was still a part of him, though, she wasn't going to pretend otherwise.

"Elena can take it. She goes to the same school her sister went to and will probably follow her into our line of work."

"Then she's set and her sister's just being protective, huh?"

Sparkle smiled faintly at that. Okay, that was kind of cool. Family that cared generally was.

Ino rolled her eyes expressively.

"We'll see," she said, "Elena's got her mind made up but Rosa ain't one to just cave easily either."

She shrugged. "They love each other fiercely. That's sometimes the problem."

"Is it?"

Sparkle... had no freaking clue what the problem with that was. Not for lack of trying.

Or maybe he did, and he just wasn't sure how to equate his personal life experience to this particular situation. He wasn't entirely sure himself.

She glanced over at him and her smile softened.

"Yeah, it can be," she said, rather gently.

A beat.

"It's nice to see that you're acting like a proper minion today."

Sparkle answered that with a faintly confused smile of his own.

"What, and being the one to feed you, for a change?"

"That's right! Doin' my bidding before I even get around to biddin' it," she said easily.

Oh, fine. She'd be a responsible minion owner.

"You okay?"

Don't minion and drive. Be sure to buckle up before taking your minion anywhere...

"I'm fine," Sparkle replied, shrugging. "I mean, I am. Just all this family talk kind of reminded me what this weekend coming is. It's, um. It' s a weird topic, that's all."

Parents weekend was coming.

This time two years ago, he was just starting to get back on his feet after the whole thing with Lew went right to hell.

Life was fucking complicated.

Always minion a balanced diet...

"I get that," she said, smiling slightly. "I ain't got no one comin' here. Rosa's got work. Reno said he might, but he's senior to Rosa so if she's got work, he'll probably have double it."

And she didn't know about the other Reno coming...

THAT was going to go over well!

"I'll be your visitor," Sparkle decided. "One annoying minion to tag along on all of your island adventures. No need to thank me, it's my solemn duty and all."

Reno would get a kick out of that.

Miguel was wandering the island and checking it out, and given the name of this shop, he had to poke his head in and see what it was.

"Oh," he said, seeing all the bath stuff. "Okay." And then, when he saw Ino, "Hi."

"You sound like you were expecting somethin' else," she said archy, vastly amused as she looked up from critiquing Elena's fashion choices. "Hey, how're you doing?"

"I wasn't sure what to expect, especially around here," Miguel confessed. "Drinks, guitar picks, actual poison? Just thought I'd see."

Oh, nerd-boy, that was pretty cute.

"I do offer a variety of loose leaf teas," Ino said brightly. "One of the students asked me if I did and so I figured, why not, I can mix those up easily enough. You're out of luck on guitar picks, though, and as for the poison..."

She shrugged.

"I'll leave that up to your imagination."

That gave Miguel a bit of a pause, but he shrugged. "I'll pass on that." He had his own built in. "And I don't play guitar. What kind of tea? I'm more a coffee guy myself, but tea's okay. Oh," he belatedly stuck out his hand, "Miguel. Miguel O'Hara."

It's on day five of rain here. I'm so sleepy thanks to that. Come back, sun! COME BACK.
