The Park, Friday Afternoon

Yeah, now the island was starting to feel a chill to go with the changing seasons, which Kanan was actually kind of grateful for as he sat meditating in the park today. The usual training sword was set to the side awaiting his student, and the usual dog was having a grand time splashing around in the pond, terrorizing the ducks.

All-in-all, not a bad day. He might stay after training Tip in order to run through his Soresu forms again, too. He was kind of itching to assemble his lightsaber today.

It was funny. That was usually a sure sign that it was time to leave and never look back, but here it had become just another Friday. Kanan wasn't entirely sure what to make of that.

[OOC: Open for hilariously incoherent pings from work after a night of insomnia woo! (I just typed 'insombie.' Twice. I think that's what you become when you ping on three hours of sleep. Braaains.)]

Tip was enjoying the cooler weather, too, spinning her own practice sword from hand to hand as she walked up and only occasionally dropping it on the ground as a result. "Heya, teach," she greeted as she walked up. "What do you suppose Stance would do if he ever actually caught one of the ducks?"

Kanan cracked open one eye and then turned a little grin toward Tip.

"My guess is I'd have to rescue him from the duck," he replied, and then pulled himself to his feet. "He's not exactly the fiercest creature on the island."

Actually, he was mostly certain Stance ranked somewhere behind the squirrels for that one.

"I mean, there's actually kind of a lot of competition for that title around here," Tip pointed out. "I wish he could get to meet Lincoln. He's the size of a small horse and still not the fiercest thing around."

"I'm sure Stance would love him," Kanan noted with a laugh. "Another dog, is he?"

Stance didn't have many of those around here to play with unless they had a chance encounter with Val, generally.

Tip nodded. "He was the Chief's junkyard dog. I'm pretty sure Lincoln let the Chief do all his barking for him."

Kanan gave a fond little smile at that. He'd liked the Chief. Tip had some good people in her life. Or had had some. Either way.

"I suppose he would've been upstaged if he tried to keep up," he noted, and then walked over to pick up his sword. "So, have you been practicing in that two weeks since we did this last?"

"I have." And not just spinning the practice sword, either. "Shins of the world beware."

"My shins are practically frozen in terror," Kanan replied, smirking faintly. They'd work on the fancy sword spinning stuff later in her training.

Possibly much, much later.

"You know, last week got me thinking about things to have you do today in training, though..."

"Well, that's forboding," Tip said. Times like these she wished training montages were a thing in real life, so she could, do, like, ten seconds of running up the stairs wearing a 50 lb training backpack or whatever, instead of three hour repetitions. "Alright, oh wise sensei, what fresh tortures have you come up with?"

"After those laps," Kanan said, because sorry, Tip, even 'two out of three' had been kind of a stretch, "I'm going to throw things at you. And you're going to not get hit by them."

At least he wasn't making her do it blindfolded. He wasn't training her to be a Jedi, here.

Hey, for someone who had famously bowled a 19, it was pretty good!

"Sadistic," Tip said. "I hope you realize that. Should I take the sword with me, or is this just a dodging exercise?"

"Here," Kanan said, nodding to the path around the lake, "I'll run with you. That's not sadistic, is it?"

Maybe it was. Maybe he was running with her so that he could better observe her suffering. Probably not, though.

"And that's up to you. Dodging is important, but so is being able to block. Do you feel like you're ready to block incoming stones with your sword, yet?"

It was definitely also sadistic. Just maybe a little less.

"Maybe," Tip said. "But fair warning, then I'll probably end up feeling bad for my sword, having to get hit by rocks and all."

Look, sometimes having enough empathy to end up bonding with a tiny advertising robot and encouraging its sentience could be a liability, okay?

"As somebody who has been working with swords for as long back as I could hold them, I promise, your sword won't mind," Kanan replied with a little grin. "I'll make them small rocks. I'm not angling to break your bones, here."

Pebbles. He was going to toss pebbles.

He reached to give her a clap on the back.

"Come on, let's start on those laps while we talk."

"If you'd come prepared, you could be using beanbags," Tip pointed out. And sighed and broke into a jog. "I could swear I took up your offer on this because I didn't want to run."

And yet, she kept coming back.

"Hey, I was raised a telekinetic warrior-monk and even I run," Kanan pointed out, jogging easily beside her. "Besides, you agreed to these laps at the carnival last week. It'll be over soon."

He turned a little grin her way.

"And beanbags, I could just throw faster. Do you really want that?"

"You were raised a telekinetic warrior monk," Tip said. "You could throw pebbles as fast as you want to, anyway."

"Yeah," Kanan agreed, "but if you miss a beanbag, it'll hurt less."

Well. In theory.

"You know, when I did that kind of training, it was against remotes firing blaster bolts at me. You've got it easy."

"Haven't we already established that your whole upbringing was weird and terrible?" Tip asked. "Why would you want to spread that on to the next generation?"

"Maybe I don't," Kanan replied cheerfully. "That's why I'm not shooting at you."

It was really hard to argue that logic.

"Right. You're just throwing rocks. That makes it all better."

It wasn't, actually.

"Small rocks, and lightly," Kanan replied, shrugging. Seriously, it was going to be hard to make him feel bad about this one, Tip. He was coming from a place where empathy just didn't lend itself well to the conversation.

... Which was odd for a Jedi, granted.

"I suppose I could get Stance to chase the ducks at you instead."

He really could, was the thing.

"If I'm going to feel bad about a sword, I'm definitely going to feel bad for the ducks."

Kanan considered that for a moment before shrugging, "Would you rather be throwing rocks at me, then?"

"I mean, ultimately I'd prefer no one throw rocks at anyone," Tip said. "But yeah, given the choice between throwing and being thrown at.. . ."
