Furnado Animal Shelter, Tuesday
Zack came in to work today to see the vet on staff looking slightly harried. They had just gotten in several litters of kittens all at once, and while they were all certainly adorable and perfectly adoptable, the vet was... iffy... about advertising kittens for adoption so close to Valentine's Day.
Zack buried his face in his hands.
"Why are there so many gift-giving holidays on this world?!"
There was a sign in the window today, reminding people that a pet was a commitment, and that puppies and kittens grew up. There was another sign in the window imploring people to not surprise loved ones with an animal for Valentine's Day- a bouquet of roses said the same thing without the unexpected responsibility. And there was a third sign in the window simply stating NOW HIRING.
Maybe he'd leave a note to his employees saying that they were putting a hold on adoptions for the week of February 11-17, unless the person who was going to be keeping the pet came in personally to choose it. Anything to mitigate the heartbreaking rush of surrenders that usually came in the weeks to follow.
