Kanan didn't make it two steps into the diner today before the staff started on him. He did an admirable job of ignoring it, a skill that he'd picked up and honed to an art form since starting to work here.

But there were really only so many times one could shrug deftly out of the way of the dishwasher and the cook trying to sneak up behind him with a pair of costume wings and a toy bow-and-arrow set before one had to acknowledge it.

"No."

"But-"

"You're going to go back into the kitchen."

"I'm going to go back into the kitchen."

"And you're going to do your job."

"And I'm going to do my job."

"That's right. There are plenty of pancakes that need to be cooked."

"That's right! Plenty of pancakes!"

The dishwasher gaped at Kanan, and then at the cook, who headed amiably back into the kitchen. Kanan gave his shoulders a shrug.

The crazy thing was, he hadn't even used the Force. You just had to know how to talk to these goons.

And there was Summer, surprise surprise, camera dangling from her neck for only a second before she lifted it up demonstrably.

"Hey, you think the cook will let me try to get a few shots of him flipping pancakes?" she asked.

Shots that she will subsequently try to edit the cook out somehow, so it looks like flying pancakes.

Summer Smith: give her even an inkling of a dumb idea, and she'll take it and run it right to the ground.

"I think the cook would let it go right to his head," Kanan laughed, nodding his greeting. "Careful back there, though. He'll probably try to stick you into some stupid costume like he's been on my case about all day."

There was no way in hell, cook. No way in hell.

"Does 'plenty of pancakes' mean there's a Fandom thing at work, or do they just really like making pancakes?" Kitty asked.

"Sunday has been pancake day since... almost as far back as I've been working here," Kanan said, faintly exasperated, before turning a grin in Kitty's direction. "I'm pretty sure the cook started to do it just to make me ask questions, and then it became a whole... thing."

He shrugged.

"There have been pancake avalanches. It gets ugly in here sometimes."

"A pancake avalanche feels like a real tragedy. So much potential, lost to the floor," Kitty said, shaking her head.

"To the floor, and onto the busboy," Kanan agreed. "And don't believe a word he tells you about them, either. I only started one of them."

He didn't even seem sorry about that.

"Don't worry, I will totally trust what you say without question," Kitty nodded. "Also now I feel like I need to have pancakes in order to save them."

"Today's are heart-shaped," Kanan chuckled. "Which the cook will insist make them taste better, somehow. I'm pretty sure that's what the berries are for, though."

"Oh, no, he's right. Shapes instantly make things taste better," she said matter-of-factly. "That's just the way it works."

Well, that earned a laugh out of Kanan, right there.

"You mean I've been eating food wrong all this time? 'Round' is about as novel a shape as I've ever had before here, I'm afraid."

Well, either 'round,' or 'this batter was definitely poured by a drunk person.'

"See, then you're coming in with a different perspective. Maybe round ones taste better to you because they're different to you."

Logic.

"Less different, more all I know," Kanan corrected, still grinning. "As it turns out, so far as food is concerned, I'm actually a pretty boring guy."

Well. Until fruit came into the picture. He could go on for a while about the textural differences and subtle undertones between a ripe jogan fruit or a meiloorun melon any day.

"Lot of hand-to-mouth living back home."

And before that, a lot of really, really boring Jedi meals or military rations.

"You're a boring food guy, and you work at a diner with this staff," Kitty said, raising an eyebrow. "...Who have pancake day every week. Okay, I get it now."

"I promise, the pancakes weren't my fault," Kanan offered, holding up his hands. "I'm going to blame those guys for that one until my dying day."

Probably. Or maybe he'd have bigger priorities. Whatever.

"That said, I am getting a bit more adventurous now that I'm here. Even I can't deny that Earth has some pretty good sweets." He shrugged. "So, pancakes? Preferably with fun shapes?"

"Yes, fun shapes are a must. You know, they don't even have to be hearts if you don't want them to be hearts," Kitty said. "Also, coffee."

"I regret to inform you that the coffee doesn't come in fun shapes," Kanan said, though he was grinning and writing down Kitty's pancake order, sending it back to the kitchen for the cook to figure out before he reached for a mug and the pot of coffee. "But you get to add as much cream and sugar as your heart desires, so that's almost as exciting."

He poured the cup and slid it across the counter to her.

"So, how've you been, lately?"

"Well," she said, reaching for the cup, "things at home blew up, semi-literally. But they've mostly calmed down now, and I'm back here, where things are normal."

Yes, she said normal. Fandom was normal.

Kanan actually paused for a moment at that, and then decided that maybe he needed to be pouring his own cup of coffee, too. He slid the little tray with the cream, milk, sugar, and so on over to Kitty in case she wanted any, and then reached for a mug for himself.

"You know I've been living here too long when I reach a point where I can hear, 'things are normal' about this place, and I actually have some idea of what you mean by it." He lifted his chin a bit in a curious nod while he poured his coffee. "Getting some much-deserved rest in, I hope?"

"Yes," she said, so happy. "I'm still helping out over there sometimes, but I'm not teaching this semester, so for the first time in forever I only have one job."

"That really does sound like the dream," Kanan laughed, spooning out entirely too much sugar into his coffee mug.

He had a sweet tooth. He would never deny it. And it wasn't like it was a mug of fancy spiran caf or anything. Let him have this.

"And things at the bar are going well?"

"Probably? I mean, it's a place with a zombie band and Tino, and we had a flamingo for a while and sometimes all liquids turn into water or whatever, so 'going well' is sort of subjective," Kitty said. "How have things here been? Have I missed anything good?"

"Costume?"

Really, was there anything else to say, as Summer stopped practically halfway getting down from the stool, eyes darting worriedly toward the kitchen.

"Some wings-and-arrows deal," Kanan called after her. "He claims that it would be better for customer service if I looked the part, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean."

Kanan was pretty sure that just by virtue of being on this side of the counter, he already looked the part.

"Things? Overall, surprisingly boring," Kanan admitted. "The biggest weirdness I've had to deal with since the slugs is the kitchen staff trying to stuff me into some kind of wings-and-halo outfit today."

He shrugged, stirred his coffee, and then took a mouthful.

"It's been quiet. Which I suppose just means we're about due."

"Probably. But I'll still blame you for jinxing it," she said, reaching for the sugar. "Can we go back to how they tried to make you dress like Cupid, and why you didn't do it?"
