"Any progress on the, ah, stolen nuts case?" Liam asked Calvin. Sure, it seemed small-scale (literally, considering the victims were squirrels), but at least it was actual crime. Unlike, say, the Bee Lady's complaints.

"Nothing." Calvin shrugged.

"Hm," Liam said, looking over Rosa's notes. "Why don't you and Ralph go stake out the woods, see if you can spot anyone suspicious."

On the bright side, having an actual crime to deal with was a good way to remind those two especially that they had actual jobs that weren't just gossiping around the coffee machine.

"I got another call about those billboards." Rosa approached Liam's desk with a thin folder, which she promptly dropped on the desk in front of him. "Said he was a fat dentist. So I went to the town directory, and I'm pretty sure we don't have a dentist in this town, much less a fat one. So I traced the call...back to the radio station. I think what we have here is a case of squirrel-on-squirrel crime."

Why the hell was that a statement that had left her mouth right now? And as much as she hated it, it had involved some actual police work, so she seized it by the horns.

Police work that was completely wasting her talent, but, dammit, it was something.

"That makes a certain amount of sense," Liam had to admit. "I mean, who else would have a use for that many nuts? If it was rum theft, well, that could be just about anyone. But nuts?"

Of course, if it had been rum theft, the squirrels probably would have gone to more drastic measures than billboards out in the preserve.

"This is nuts," Rosa murmured. "What's up with these squirrels, anyway? Are they...I don't even know, some by-product of a weird secret government experiment or something?"

"They could be," Liam said with a shrug. But then, that description could easily apply to any number of people who lived on the island. "Or they just figured out how to monetize gossip." Possibly both.
