Luke's, Sunday
Today was actually a pretty normal day, at Luke's. The kitchen staff had gotten their weird animal costume thing out of their systems. Pancakes were being cooked. Nobody was trying to dress Kanan up in anything stupid. But there was some sort of family reunion event going on over at one of the tables at the far end of the diner. They'd specifically requested that the table be away from any windows in order to avoid injury for any of the family members, which Kanan had thought was a little weird, but at least he was polite enough not to say anything about it.
The kitchen staff was looking at him like he was a little crazy when he opened the door to let the family in-- a good many of them, tinier than most sentients that Kanan was used to, but dressed in little hats and scarves, and actually fairly polite. They ordered a few plates of pancakes to split between them all, and were happily minding their own business, beeping and chirping and being a generally adorable little family all the same.
Today's Specials:
Pancakes
Popcorn
Birdseed
"You, uh, know those are finches, right?" Asked the busboy, looking at Kanan a little sideways.
"Don't be rude," Kanan replied, glancing back at him. "They're some of the best behaved customers I've ever served."

"That's my favorite," he confessed. He was kind of a sucker for fruit, though. "And you can totally pretend it's healthy if there are actual blended strawberries in it, right?"
His logic was sound and nobody could tell him otherwise.

She smirked a little, folding her arms on the counter and leaning forward while she waited. "So," she offered, "you think you'll be totally bored around here with probably more than half the population of the island shipping off to a foreign country, or you think you'll keep yourself occupied somehow?"
no subject
"I mean, I doubt Hera and I are going to stick around here all week when we could be causing hell back home for the Empire," he pointed out. "Boredom isn't likely to be in the cards. But I promise I'll heave a wistful sigh and wish I had some folks from the island around while I'm running and shooting blaster bolts at stormtroopers."

Which was...a weird statement if you only thought about it a little bit, but if you thought about it more and remembered that Summer had been to more planets than she had other states, even...it kinda made sense.

"I mean, any time we do a flying lesson and you want to make a pit stop on the way back from the moon," Kanan replied, smirking. "But besides that..."
no subject
And she was a little pissed off that she'd only be getting two of them.
no subject
"Yeah? Well, I'll have to live vicariously through you this time around, I suppose," Kanan noted. "I suppose this is what I get for not teaching for your last semester. I'm sure you'll take pictures, at least?"
no subject
And then a thought struck her and her head tilted, "You know, they say you can see the Great Wall from space and next time we have a lesson, we are totally going to see if that's true so I can be all, 'I've totally been there!'"

". . . Are you having some kind of bird party?"

Look, they were wearing little hats. Kanan couldn't be expected to assume they weren't sentient.
no subject
"Did they actually order the birdseed, or. . . ?"
no subject
He shrugged. None of this seemed all that strange to space boy, here.
no subject
"They ordered . . . pancakes." Right. Okay. "They're not students, are they?"
Eliot had been a wolverine, you never knew.
no subject
"No, they booked the table for a family reunion," Kanan explained. And then squinted a little. "You're looking quizzical, Eliot."
no subject
He had no idea what they did in trees.

Look, there were thousands of sentient species where Kanan came from. Some of them were birds. It happened.

Though considering that the squirrels reported the news and apparently required law enforcement was making that harder to say firmly that it wasn't a Fandom thing.

"Right," he said, slowly. "But neither is plenty of what happens here, exactly, is it? I was just talking about your hangup about avian family reunions."
Someday he'd drag you to his neck of the woods, Eliot. Introduce you to the Rishii or something. Though he supposed they didn't exactly have family reunions in diners, either.

Since the gremlins and the squirrels were, he assumed, native to the island. Or at least well established.
