Furnado Animal Shelter, Tuesday
Zack had brought his dog, Girl, in to the shelter today. Which was probably fortunate, because today there were a bunch of new puppies in, all floppy and tripping over themselves, and in need of some direction. And Girl was nothing if not a helpful dog, so she was stepping in and kind of herding them around the lobby, showing them the ropes around here. She had been in the shop for a while before Ino had taken her home, after all. She knew what was up.
Zack decided early on not to interfere. It was kind of soothing watching Girl round up the pups, and always entertaining to see their little tails going behind them as they did their best to keep up.
He had the best job.

But it was just so freaking quiet. She was used to the noise of the city, the cars, the sirens, the shouts and the occasional gunshot. Here, all she got was the now seemingly ceaseless chittering of squirrels.
So she came here, to the animal shelter, and looked around for someone in charge. But she guessed the guy with the hair was the closest she'll get.
"Hey," she said. "I need a dog."

For a shelter that seemed to get plenty of animals in, they didn't seem to get many people in looking for animals.

And then hitched her thumb, realizing that a chin in the general direction of a multitude of puppies wasn't likely very helpful.
The dog in question wagged its tail. Rosa might have actually even smirked a little, but you'd have to be really sharp to have caught it.

"What's it come with?"

"Food and water dishes, your first bag of puppy chow, poop bags, a bag of treats, a leash, a collar, a brush, a chew toy, nail clippers, and dog shampoo," he rattled off. "The basics for puppy maintenance, mostly. At least enough to get you going."

"Okay, sure," she said, "I'll take one."
She looked at the puppy; the puppy looked back at her and she lifted her chin. The puppy yawned as if bored and settled down with his chin on his paws, his gaze turning doleful.
She sucked in a hesitatant breath before she added, "You got any of those dog beds, too? You know, those big fluffy ones that you get for the dog so it doesn't sleep on your bed, but it sleeps on your bed anyway?"

It was big and fluffy, but otherwise pretty basic. All of the real attention had been put into getting the proper bed-to-fluff ratio down pat for proper puppy comfort. Girl even let her tail wag behind her in approval as Zack pulled it off the shelf.
"But you can feel free to poke through the other ones, if you like."

She liked that.
"Yeah, throw that in, too," she said. "And maybe some of those rawhide chews. My old dog used to love those."

Considering the population of the island, Zack figured he'd keep the paperwork to something of a minimum. It wasn't like he couldn't hunt down each and every person who ever took an animal home if the squirrels reported something on the radio that suggested that those animals weren't being taken care of.
And when he hunted down people, it was with a really, really big sword.

"That quick, huh?" She was a little surprised, but she supposed it was a small island, how hard was it to check all that crap anyway? And she'd probably met half as many dogs here as she had people here, so she was maybe surprised they weren't just handing them out as welcoming gifts. "And, yeah, I think that's it. I'm sure I can swing back around if there's anything I forgot."
Not like she had much else to do. She started for the counter, too, titling her head at her soon-to-be dog, making a little kissing sound as she patted her thigh to beckon the dog over to her. The pup just looked up with those eyes and tilted her head quizzically. So Rosa pulled her coup de grace by sliding the little piece of beef jerky she had hidden up her sleeve just enough for those big stupid loveable eyes to see it.
And that got the puppy's attention, standing up at full attention with a wagging tail. Rosa let her smirk surface this time as she slid the beef jerky back. She knew it was there, and the dog knew it was there, and they both understood that if the dog came with her, the jerky would transfer from Rosa's sleeve to the puppy's mouth. The first unspoken agreement out what she assumed would be many.

That wasn't a threat. It was just sort of a cheerful acknowledgment of the fact that radio was very invasive.
"So we don't worry too much." He smiled toward the puppy. "You seem to have a way with dogs, huh?"
Or some beef jerky up her sleeve. One of those.

And Rosa might have revealed the trick to her sudden charisma if he hadn't gone and brought up squirrels.
"Ugh, those gossipy little drama queens are your source for animal abuse?"
No. She was not a fan.

He shrugged his shoulders.
"I won't bribe Leroy into following you home or anything. That would be weird. And kind of gross."
And Leroy would probably do it anyway. So.
