Luke's Diner, Saturday

Miguel showed up for his shift largely in the hope that the diner would have power, since home didn't.

No such luck.

Not that that seemed to slow the staff down at all.

"You know we're probably not going to get a lot of business today, right?"

The cook shrugged.

Luke's was open!

Yeah, it hadn't taken Bobby long to get bored with hanging around the dorms when there was no power. So he'd headed out into town, despite the storm. Because it wasn't like that sort of thing was actually a problem for him.

Only nowhere in town seemed to have power either. There was, at least, one place that seemed to be open?

"Uh, hi?"

Miguel looked up from where he was trying to jury-rig a coffee brewer over some candles. “Hey there. What can we get you that doesn’t take heat? Or were you just looking for people?”

"Little of both. Well. I'd been hoping for a burger, but, uh..." obviously, that wasn't happening. "Got any ice cream?"

Miguel grinned. “That we can do. I don’t get how the freezer here works, but it’s not on the grid.” It was a little cold for it in his opinion, but whatever. “What flavor?”

It was never too cold for ice cream when you were Bobby Drake. "Cherry?" he asked hopefully.

"Pretty sure we have that." Miguel nodded. "Be right back."

Fortunately, he saw just fine in the dark, so it didn't take too long to find the ice cream, a bowl, and a spoon.

"Here you go," he said, setting it down in front of the kid. "And it's on the house, because hell if I know how to charge anyone when the register won't open."

"Thanks!" It took Bobby until he was in the middle of his first spoonful of ice cream to remember something resembling manners, so it was more of a "Fanksh!" but, well. The effort was there, anyway.

"I'm Bobby, by the way," he added. At least this time he wasn't speaking with his mouth full.

Hey, it was more than some customers gave; Miguel wasn't bothered.

"Miguel," he answered. "Nice to meet you. You a student at the school?"

"Yuh huh," Bobby nodded. "Just started in January. S'pretty cool so far."

"I've never been up there," Miguel confessed. "I know some folks who've taught there, though. It seems like a good place. Just as weird as the rest of the island, but good."
