Well, one more day before the dreaded 'new people coming to the island' thing, which by this point you'd think Kanan would be more used to. Except that, given Fandom's population, he could never quite be sure what sorts of people would arrive here. He'd mostly lucked out, granted, with Jedi and people who weren't hostile toward them, but one Parents Weekend encounter with Darth Vader was enough to get his hackles up about these things anyway.

So, he had his lightsaber out today. It was a gorgeous day for it, and he was trying his hand at some of the more aggressive forms, putting the Force behind leaps and acrobatics that... well... he was rusty at, yes, but there was only one way to fix that, and a Force leap, even a rusty one, was something pretty spectacular so long as you didn't land on your ass.

Stance had found himself a sunny spot, parking himself on the bench for a snooze.

Overall, it was a good day to train, and who knew whether he'd feel safe doing things like this next week?

It shouldn't be a surprise that Rey would show up to watch without wanting to interrupt. But this was the stuff she liked better, and it was really fun to see.

And maybe she was wondering how much of this he'd had her do that one time, if any. Not that she'd admit it.

And another leap, Kanan landing in a crouch, lightsaber coming down and slashing outwards, missing the trunk of a nearby tree by barely a breath...

Kanan straightened up and turned to look at Rey, giving her a nod.

"Hey," he greeted. "Here for a spar, for a dog, or to watch, today?"

Seivarden was, rather sulkily, taking Issa to the park today as well, since the cat had been in a terrible mood since yesterday. When she saw Kanan and Stance ahead, she put Issa down on the grass and the cat leapt out of her hands, running towards her friend.

Sighing, Seivarden kept far away so as to not have to talk to Kanan, as usual. That didn't mean she didn't catch a glimpse of one of those force leaps.

Oh. That was good. That was way better than anything Seivarden had ever been able to do. She felt a sting of an uncomfortable feeling that she preferred not to think of as jealousy. Turning her back towards Kanan, she looked for a bench, hoping tea would make that feeling go away.

Stance just so happened to be on a bench, and was perking up at the sound of a cat landing in the grass. Oh! Oh, his friend! His favorite cat in the whole wide world! His tail was wagging like crazy as he jumped down from the bench and trotted across the lawn to meet her.

Kanan, on the other hand? Well. He was aware that Seivarden was there, and that was plenty. There was something... jealousy? He couldn't be sure without looking closer, and so far as people like her went... well. He didn't find himself particularly wanting to look closer.

Still, he was holding back, now that she was there. Slipping back into his more comfortable defensive forms. Fewer acrobatics, more quick, even inhumanly fast, work with just the sword. Her back was turned. He was hardly showing off.

Breq didn't particularly like breaks. What was the point? She preferred to keep busy. So between the trip to Hyrule and the summer workshops, she had ended up wandering around the island a lot, humming the tunes she had picked up on the trip.

On her way through the park, she saw Kanan and approached him.

"That's impressive."

"The dog looks pretty comfortable where he is," Rey said, looking over at Stance. "Maybe a spar? If you're done practicing."

Seriously, it looked neat.

"It's not something I've done much over the last little while," Kanan admitted, turning to look at Breq with a nod as he shut off his lightsaber. "Can't hurt to brush up on that, though. Hey, Breq. How are you doing today?"

"It's nothing I can't pick up again later," Kanan replied, smiling faintly as he shut off his lightsaber and made his way over to fetch his bamboo sword. "You know, a spar sounds like a good time."

"It sounds like a good time?" Rey repeated, smiling as she pulled her staff free.

"Sure," Kanan replied, shooting her a grin. "It's not every day I spar with someone who can keep me on my toes. I look forward to it."

"I feel like that's giving me a lot of credit," Rey said.

"I feel like maybe you've never been given enough credit," Kanan countered. "Would you feel better if I just said you're a fast learner and it's interesting to see how you adapt what you see me doing?"

"Yes, I like that," she said, and tilted her head. "What do you mean, you don't think I've been given enough credit?"

"I just figure you're always a little too quick to sell yourself short," Kanan replied with a shrug. "You've got clear talent, Rey. When I tell you that, I'm not doing it just to give you a big ego or something."

Wherever that talent happened to come from, it was there.

"I'm just being realistic," she shrugged.

Which, no she was not, but there were some mental gymnastics that had to be done when your main goal was to waste your time on a desert waiting for for people who were never showing up.

"I'm not saying I'm bad or anything," she added quickly. "And I appreciate that."

Tip was very excited to get to sword practice, today, practically skipping as she made her way through the park.

She had a sword. A real one! And it was gorgeous! Sure, it didn't hum audibly, but she rather thought it was pretty fabulous anyway.

"Hey Sensei!" she called as she got close. "Guess what I got over vacation!"

Oh, hey, that excitement was practically tangible, and Kanan was grinning as he planted his feet and shut off his lightsaber, speaking as he turned to face her.

"What did you get over vacation?"

Something exciting, no doubt.

To his credit, Kanan managed to keep from sighing audibly. He just shrugged his shoulders and offered Rey a smile.

"Good thing you aren't saying you're bad," he replied, a teasing note in his voice. "I'd hate to think what that would say about me, if you were."

Since, like he'd said before, she was one of the people around here who stood a chance of keeping him on his toes in a spar.

"You're great," Rey said, quickly and sincerely. "I was just watching you."

Kanan huffed out a little laugh at that, shrugging his shoulders.

"I'm just a student myself," he replied. "There are greater, even here on the island. But thanks. I'm working on it."

It was still a work in progress. But he was getting there.

Tip drew her zora sword with a flourish that she may have totally practiced for hours in the salle this week, and posed in the most dramatic stance from the forms she knew that still showed off the blade to its best advantage.

"Tada!"

Kanan blinked, and then let loose with a low whistle.

"Okay, that's a nice blade," he shared. "And you got that on vacation?"

Where did he have to vacation to get a sword like that?

"All right, you take compliments better than I do," she allowed.

"Yup! We went to visit Sidon's home world. They have swords just lying around and a total 'finders keepers' policy for acquiring them. It was awesome."

"It's not a bad skill to have," Kanan shared, still smiling as he picked up his bamboo sword and gave it a spin. "Humility is fine, but a compliment's a compliment. So long as you don't get a big head, they're great."
