The Jackdaw, at the Docks, Sunday Afternoon

"Lads," Edward said, squinting upwards towards the tallest mast. "It's been almost a week."

"I don't care," the thin, limber man sitting at the very top bellowed. "If there's another storm comin', I want us to be ready!"

With a sigh, Edward looked towards the nearest deckhand. "It wasn't that bloody bad, was it?"

"There were rainbows," the deckhand said gravely. "And Grim, well-- he'd been pissin' off the side of the ship, if you get my meaning."

There was a brief but pregnant silence, and then Edward turned on his heel and stalked towards the bow of the ship. "Might ask the mayor for one of those port-a-potties while we're marooned here," he muttered to himself.

Octavia had never seen anything like this. Not that that was saying much, considering her background. But there were new things, and then there were new things, and only the latter kind left her intrigued enough to make her way closer once she'd spotted it.

Yeah, she ended up standing on the dock by the Jackdaw, wide-eyed.

The wonder fell off Octavia's face. For the most part, anyway - she couldn't quite keep it away as her gaze darted to take in a detail or two. Like looking at things made her forget she should've controlled her face.

She looked up. "Whose ship is this?"

"Okteivia kom Skaikru."

Inaccurate, but good enough. Probably should've followed that up with something else, too, but this was Octavia, so... She didn't.

"The language of my people," Octavia said. "The Grounders."

Yes, even though she'd just said something that had suspiciously sounded like 'Sky Crew'. A little more dryly, she added, "Don't suppose you know them." She really, really didn't.

Fun fact: they were fairly local to this area, if not this time. Octavia was just yet to figure that out.

She shrugged. "From about a hundred years into the future from this island's time, I guess." And you could probably tell something about that time's general state by how she was still half dressed for battle. "You don't look that local either, though."

"Guess so," Octavia agreed. That was one of the things about this place that didn't seem to faze her. The change between the Ark and the ground had been drastic enough to be a century's shift, anyway. "And you got to bring your ship with you?"

Because she hadn't even gotten to bring Helios.

That earned a snort, dry though it may have been. "It seems to like doing that." She and her brother were both good examples. "So now you're stranded here?"

That sounded awfully familiar.

"And you're not going to try just sailing away?"

Sorry, Ed. You'd sparked a rare bit of curiosity in her. She was still eyeing the ship every few moments.

"Figures," Octavia replied, not without empathy -- okay, maybe it sounded like it was without empathy. She had a pretty flat delivery happening, more often than not. "My brother and I have been looking for a way back where we came from for a... while, now."

"So we're all just at the mercy of a sentient hunk of rock?" Octavia drawled.

Then she paused.

"Well, I guess that's not so different from where I came from."

Octavia shrugged. "The ground is irradiated, where I'm from," she said. "Might not be sentient, but it's still a hostile environment."

Which she also considered Fandom to be. No matter how easy life seemed to be here most of the time.

Octavia's shrug was much more vague, this time. "It's not anything new." She'd been on Fandom long enough not to expect anyone to know anything. "Irradiated means everything around you is basically toxic, unless you've developed a tolerance for it."
