Kanan walked into Luke's just in time to catch the cook hunkering over the specials board, about to fill in whatever nefarious menu item he was going to follow his truth to today.

"No."

The cook turned to look up at him, scandalized.

"If it isn't pancakes, no. You remember last week? I had to get the regulars to yell at you. August has been a long month and you're going to give them some goddamn pancakes."

"Pancakes," the cook muttered, grudgingly.

Sure, Summer expected most of her day to be commandeered by trying to get the most out of the Newbie Weekend for her new business, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to take at least a good chunk of time for lunch to pop on over to Luke's because, hello, tradition.

She also had a small plastic container with a piece of jello in it with her as well.

"BDG!" she announced. "I've brought you food to bribe you with in exchange for bus driver stories!"

Sure, she knew she didn't have to bribe him for bus driver stories, but it was just a little more fun that way.

Kanan blinked up from the counter he'd been wiping down, and then laughed easily.

"I will take that bribe," he declared in turn. "What am I being bribed with today? Because Summer, do I have stories for you."

Teenagers. Were. Hell.

Thought the man with the two besties who were, in fact, still teenagers.

"Well, that sounds promising!" Summer was pleased by this news, yes, grinning as she slid onto her usual stool, then slid the plastic container over. "And that is blackberry jello made with coconut water. Today's jello du jour." She waved a dismissive hand. "It's a thing I'm doing."

"See," Kanan noted, "I still don't know what half of what you just said means, but I am pretty sure it's something worth the good story."

He grinned a little.

"Almost lost the bus yesterday."

Damn right it was worth the good story! Summer wiggled in her seat to settle in.

And whatever she might have expected him to say, that was definitely not it, as indicated by her eyebrows hitching up toward her hairline.

"...hoooow?" she asked slowly, but the more she thought about it, the more she figured if anyone was going to almost lose a bus, she wouldn't be surprised that it would be Kanan. Even if she couldn't for the life of her begin to piece together the deets.

"Let's just say that I've learned my lesson about getting off the bus to go get coffee, even if I happen to be ahead of schedule." Kanan rolled his eyes. Expressively. "Two of the new kids pried the door open and hotwired the damn thing. They were about to hit the gas when I got back."

Don't laugh, Summer. It wasn't funny. Don't la--

--she couldn't help laughing. Sorry, BDG. "Holy shit," she said. She was kind of impressed, actually. Looks like this group of kids had some balls on them. "What did you do?"

"I might have yelled. A bit. Chased them out of the seat and put up with them calling me mean all the way back to the island. This batch of kids is a pack of menaces, I swear."

"But you are mean," Summer said, just letting the giggles flow. "A mean, old, cranky bus driver who won't let enterprising young kids hotwire a bus. Please tell me at least one of those menaces are modern and/or tech savvy enough to have recorded that."

"There was the kid who was snapping all the pictures," Kanan mused. "If anybody caught that one for posterity, my guess is it would be him."

More likely than the sleepy boy or the Sith, anyway.

A picture was worth a thousand words, sure, but it wasn't good for as many fake internet points as posting a video like that online.

Not that she'd ever do something like that, honest!

"I might have to hunt him down, then, see what he's got," Summer said, grinning. "Okay, so you've got your attempted bus thieves, your paparazzi....who else?"

"There was also the really tired kid who wasn't much for conversation," Kanan replied. "And the one I think I'm supposed to be sworn enemies with?"

That was a story, too.

"Didn't you have a sleepy kid last time, too?"

Man, kids these days just could not handle their interdimensional travel!

"And run that last one by me again?"

If Sabine didn't know the radio schedule, she'd have come in with a rum bribe. Instead, she was able to go straight to the counter and say, "Hi. Got time for some questions?"

Because yesterday meant she had them.

Kanan... could only begin to guess at what those questions were.

"I've got time," he replied, setting down his dish rag. "What kind of questions have you got, Sabine?"

"Did you meet a girl named Lana at all yesterday?" she asked.

Kanan grimaced. Well. It hadn't taken long for that to come back to him, had it?

"Yeah," he confirmed. "She was one of the new students on the bus. Why do you ask?"

He was putting together a really good guess as to why she was asking, yes.

"Well, she was asking about lightsaber training and saying she's Sith. I don't really know anything about that, so I'm wondering what I need to know and if there's anything I should or shouldn't say around her."

She had his back, basically.

He appreciated that more than he could express.

"Sith are... Sith were? The opposite of the Jedi," Kanan sighed. "The Dark to our Light. We're not exactly on great terms."

Leave that understatement to Kanan, right?

"I'm... assessing. Not sure how safe it is to be out about what I am. She insists that she intends to respect the neutrality of the island... So that's good?"

He sounded dubious.

"She seems normal, and she doesn't seem to be from our time." Actually Sabine kind of liked her, but she also didn't trust people in general. "And she at least knows about your class."

Kanan couldn't quite bite down a sigh.

"She's a confusing one, from where I'm standing," he admitted. "But then that wouldn't be a first around here, either."

He kind of also liked her too. It was breaking his brain.

"If she turns out to be cool, she doesn't get to be TA, though," she said, only half-teasing. Like, a quarter teasing. "I didn't tell her anything about you, or anyone else."

"She doesn't get to be TA too," Kanan promised, smiling faintly. "I appreciate your discretion there. Until I know what to make of her..."

He shrugged. "I don't want to put anybody in danger. Us or her."

"What kind of danger would she be in?" Sabine wondered.

"She's one Sith on an island that sees multiple Jedi," Kanan explained. "I have no idea how any of them are going to react to her. Maybe they'll avoid her. Maybe they'll ignite their lightsabers."

He really didn't want to have to throw himself between the Dean and a student. He wouldn't last ten seconds.
