The Park; Thursday Afternoon [09/20].
Since Astrid didn't have to make any creepy and weird hybrids of animals in science class today, she should have been able to mark today as a good one, even if apparently she was on the student council now, thanks a lot, case worker and there only being four people in her graduating class. But she found it difficult to find victory in such a small thing with something much larger looming over her head, and she tried to push it away, but it kept coming back and taking over every corner of her mind.
Still no letter from her mother. She'd been swinging by the post office every day to check, and there was nothing. She thought maybe she could call, but the pay phones had always been frustrating when she wanted to use them the most, and she also had her cell phone, but it wasn't an emergency or anything, she just...wasn't sure what was up. They'd been writing to each other consistently for months now. Why the delay? Maybe it wasn't even Ingrid's fault, maybe there were letters, they were just...stuck somehow in whatever strange time travel vortex separated them at the moment, some Portalocity thing beyond anyone's control.
It didn't sit well with Astrid, and as a result, she couldn't sit still. She'd gone to the park after going to the post office again to check, to no avail, and had only been there on a bench, watching the ducks, for maybe five minutes before she started to wonder if she should go back and check again. Maybe she'd just gotten there too early? Maybe she should just wait there and see if anything came in? But she realized that was being obsessive and wouldn't help her get her mind off things.
So it was just going to be staring at ducks, until even the ducks started to feel a little uncomfortable about it, wishing it really could be as easy as just painting a spiral on a pinwheel.
