There was something going on at the park so Jack and Kaidan wandered over. She leaned against a tree, arms crossed under her chest. Surveying the festivities and smirking.

Kaidan was standing next to her trying to hold onto some semblance of patience.

Miguel was here. He'd sort of gotten dragged here by Gabriel, who thought the whole thing was hysterical and was recording the whole thing for holos, even if he knew he couldn't show them back home.

Hey, look! This was, like, a normal, happy, family art activity! Pick a pumpkin or other gourd, and either color it with sharpies, stick on goggly eyes, or carve it out to be a lantern! Let your creativity shine!

"Gourd carving?" Lana eyed it dubiously, but it did seem the least objectionable of the possibilities.

"What are these supposed to be for?" Darth Vowrawn asked.

"Decorations, I think," Lana answered. "I've seen local TV - like holos, but flat - where they're carved out and have fire or lights inside them to shine through."

"How interesting." Darth Vowrawn picked one up, turned it around, and thumped on it. "They're not hollow?" He checked what some of the pictures looked like. "Hm." He gave Lana a look. "Should word of this activity ever make it back to the Council, there will be blood."

Lana bowed. "Understood, Dark Lord."

Vowrawn clapped his hands together. "Excellent. Let's see what we can do."

Which was how they ended up slicing the tops of two pumpkins off with their lightsabers and scooping out the insides with the Force.

Jack wandered over when people pulled out some sort of giant plasma knives and started levitating pumpkin guts. Finally, something interesting.

"Nice knives," she commented.

Lana looked over at the girl with all the tattoos. "Our lightsabers, you mean?" She thought about it. "A knife-sized saber would be good to have, sometimes."

Like now. When it came to carving a design, even a small vibroknife would be an improvement over whatever the tiny blades they were given were.

"A saber kills much more efficiently," Darth Vowrawn said with a sniff. "If you want to be a sculptor, speak to my apprentice." He honestly despaired of Qet sometimes.

"I doubt that's my calling, Dark Lord," Lana answered. She set her latest hovering glob of pumpkin guts down and turned to Jack, holding out a hand. "Lana Beniko."

"Is that what they're called? Huh. Neat. I thought sabers were curved. The red's pretty sweet," Jack said. She shook Lana's hand, "Jack. Fan of all things efficient and lethal."

"There are some with curved hilts, but the blade is emitted plasma," Lana said, taking out her hilt and turning it over so Jack could see. "The red comes from the crystals they're made with." She turned it back on and made a few small passes with it.

Jack looked the weapon over with interest. "We have some plasma weapons back home but they're mostly ballistics. I don't think anyone's made a sword out of it before. Mostly they use monofilament for blades."

She nodded at the sword, "They common where you come from?"

No, Jack, you don't need a lightsaber.

"Only among Sith and Jedi," Lana said. She turned hers off and hooked it back to her belt. "You have to have a connection to the Force to use one effectively. A monofilament blade sounds useful, though. Guessing it cuts through just about anything?"

"Don't know what those are," Jack said. Kaidan had equated 'Jedi' to 'Krogan shaman' but what the fuck did he know anyway. "Yeah, though, on monofilament. Cuts through almost everything. Mostly people. They don't have a more industrial use. I mean, swords." She shrugged a shoulder.

"Haven't even seen one since the last half of the war. Kaidan probably has them locked in a vault somewhere."

"What good do they do anyone in a vault?" Lana asked. "Just because you're not at war doesn't mean you can't use weapons.

"Exactly!" Jack crowed, "I've said the same thing and he just answers blah-blah-traumatizing-Reaper-tech." She gave a sniff. "He doesn't get it, but I guess they pay him to be a do-gooder, so."

She nodded at the pumpkin guts. "You need those for anything?"

"He's worried about weapons traumatizing people?" Wasn't that partly what they were for?

Lana glanced back at the guts. "Not that I know of. Are they good for anything?"

"Only Reaper tech," Jack shrugged, "Guns, knives, shit like that he's got no problem with." Reapers were creepy and their tech was worse. She could get behind that, except that would mean agreeing with Kaidan.

She grinned at Lana. "Oh yes. This."

Using biotics because she was sure not touching that slimy seedy stringy yuck with her very own hands, Jack picked up a giant blob of it and made a small throwing motion with her hand. The gloop went winging over everyone's head hurled by a terrible force. Aimed at Kaidan.

Who cheated.

He developed a sparkly blue aura and the pumpkin gloop hit that with a small zapping noise and fell to the ground. He looked across the clearing at her and mouthed, 'Really???'

"I didn't know he could do that." Lana eyed him and Jack with interest. "How did you do that? You don't use the Force."

Jack snorted, "That's his favorite party trick." She took a breath and bellowed at Kaidan, "BECAUSE HE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO HAVE ANY FUN AT PARTIES, THE STICK-IN-THE-MUD."

Back to a normal volume. "Don't know what the Force is," she admitted, "Keep hearing the word, though. How we do that, though? Biotics. DNA damage that lets us tap into a different energy stream blah blah blah we can do cool shit with our brains." She slotted a glance at Kaidan. "Some of us can do cool shit, some of us are no fucking fun at all."

"The Force is...simply speaking, the energy of everything in the universe. Some of us can manipulate it." Lana picked up another scoop of glop and floated it over to Jack. "It can do some wonderful things, but it's also useful for not having to touch this stuff."

She thought about what Jack was trying for. "Does he have to see it coming?"

"Huh. Sort of the same, but ours isn't 'of everything'. It's a different substream of energy only biotics can tap into and use," Jack mused.

She cut a glance at Kaidan, "I was hoping he wouldn't see it coming but I guess he hasn't been slacking off as much as I thought during his vacation here in the land of weird and wacky."

A small tilt of her chin. "The blue glow? While he's doin' that, pretty much nothing can touch him. The gloop'll just hit it, fry a little and fall to the ground. Minute it's down, though.." She smirked.

"So if, say, you floated a bit up when he wasn't looking, then hovered it over him until he dropped his guard...?" Lana suggested.

"Can you do that?" Jack asked because she was curious, "That's not something I can do. All my shit's kinetic, doesn't really do pauses and hovering."

She made a face in Kaidan's direction but admitted, "You'd have to hold it up so far he couldn't see it. He's not one of those stupid fuckers who never looks up. Even then, he might just get the creepies about it and move. He's like that. No fun at all."

A glance around the clearing, "But not everybody's got a barrier like that.."

"I'll thank you both not to start a food fight," Darth Vowrawn broke in. "At least not until I'm well out of range of any potential recordings."

"Yes, Lord," Lana said. She hid most of her smile if not her amusement.

"Yes, I can," she informed Jack, reaching for more pumpkin and forming a ball mid-air, then holding it there. "But there aren't many people here I'm interested in hitting with it."

She was fine with helping, but wasn't particularly motivated to throw food on her own account.

Lord?

Jack looked at the wet blanket she'd mostly been ignoring in favor of the pretty blonde kid. Huh. Face tentacles. That was probably Darth WhatsHisYawn then. She gave him a lazy once-over. Clothing kind of a mix between Asari and Turian aesthetics and what even was with those shoulder pads.

The red eyes were nice, though. Reminded her of Wrex. She offered him a slow smile, "We'll give you time to get out of range. Wouldn't wanna get any on ya."

Went back to surveying the crowd. Nodded at another guy who looked about as fun as Kaidan, if the martyred expression were to be believed. "Dude in the sunglasses?"

Lana glanced over. "I think he's one of the teachers. I've never really met him. I don't have any reason to attack him." She shrugged. "The...goop...is all yours, though."

She wasn't going to help, but she wasn't about to stop Jack, either.

Darth Vowrawn looked back at Jack, amused. "My dear, I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself. I simply have no intention of being filmed at it."

"I'm pretty sure my asshole brother's got a picture of us talking," Jack said, "but even he knows better than to video anything around me. Not if he wants to keep that shiny little phone of his."

She shrugged, "Probably in case anyone presses charges later."

Jack looked at the man in glasses. Thought about it for a moment. Decided Throw might actually hurt him if it hit. Made a face because she'd even had that second thought in the first place. Damnit Kaidan you contagious asshole!

She took the pumpkin glop in her hand and send it hurtling at Miguel in an unenhanced fashion.

Miguel glimpsed it coming out of the corner of his eye and dove out of the way almost faster than the eye could see.

Leaving it to hit Gabriel square in the face.

"Hey!"

Miguel hit the ground laughing.

"Very funny." Gabriel looked around for who'd thrown that.

Jack looked as if butter wouldn't melt in her mouth.

With his better vision and sense of where it'd come from, Miguel looked in that direction, saw Lana and Jack, and gave them a surreptitious grin and thumbs-up.

GUYS. There are SO MANY COLORS of string! Cute charms! GLITTER.

Come on. You know you want to. Yang will totally give the family-ish-group with the best matching ones a prize.

...the prize was more materials to make additional bracelets. SHHH.

"No." Miguel gave Gabi a flat look.

Gabriel crossed his arms. "I'm not playing paintball with you."

"I'm not complimenting any damn fish."

"And I can't take a pumpkin back home with me. So get to braiding." Gabriel held out a handful of string.

Miguel glowered.

...Kinda. Go to the pond and work together to pay compliments to the fish! Say nice things about Fandom! If you get the Alot of Fish to come over to you from the power of Kindness and Friendship, you get a prize!

Had Yang somehow found lots of plastic toy fish somewhere? Yes, yes she had. Had she spray-painted all of them bright gold and glittery, with 'SABOTAGE' written on their bodies in red sharpie?

There's bottles of water and healthy-ish snacks of all types on the picnic tables, for when you need to refuel between bouts of FAMILY BONDING.

Need to hide behind/in/between trees for a bit to avoid people? This is where the cool kids emo.

There was nothing odd about a raven perching on a branch of a tree, watching everything with interest. Ravens were smart creatures, it was probably looking for a chance to get some food.
